Description peter czanik 2005-08-10 09:12:50 UTC
I installed beta1 on a laptop. After the first CD, when the system was rebooted,
the computer did not start. It turned out on the next try, that for some reason
grub was installed to /dev/hda3 instead of /dev/hda (MBR). I changed it to MBR,
and now it seems to work.
The strange thing is, that my desktop machine has almost the same partitions,
and there GRUB was installed correctly to MBR.
Comment 1 Jiri Srain 2005-08-10 09:24:40 UTC
Could you, please, attath the installation logs (see
http://www.suse.de/~sh/Bugreporting-faq/index.html#id2518603 for details)
Comment 2 peter czanik 2005-08-10 09:36:51 UTC
Yes, but I'm still installing that machine...

Comment 4 Jiri Srain 2005-08-10 10:40:42 UTC
It was decided to install bootloade by default to boot sector of /boot
partition. You obviously chaneged it to install to MBR (according to log).

There was no error while installing bootloader. Did you get any arror while
attempting to boot during installation? Everything seems to have been saved
correctly.
Comment 5 peter czanik 2005-08-10 10:55:50 UTC
For this second try I did not have any error. But for my first try, when I left
it at /dev/hda3, the notebook did not even recognise, that my hdd is bootable,
and tried to boot from the network. So I reinstalled, and this time, I changed
GRUB to use the MBR.
Comment 6 Jiri Srain 2005-08-10 11:00:54 UTC
OK, so the logs come from the second installation, right?
Comment 7 Jiri Srain 2005-08-10 11:01:22 UTC
And the second installation booted properly if I understand you correctly.
Comment 8 peter czanik 2005-08-10 11:04:21 UTC
Yes, logs are from second install (it's difficult to get information out from an
unbootable system...).
Comment 9 Jiri Srain 2005-08-15 11:32:46 UTC
Sorry, but then I can hardly help you (as I can't determine what was wrong).
It is quite probable that this bug is a duplicate of another bug (most
probably 103031).

Sorry, but can't help you (#define WONTFIX CANTFIX)
Comment 10 peter czanik 2005-08-15 11:44:24 UTC
OK, I'm still testing on this machine, with 4G worth of ADSL download :) But
when beta2 comes out, I will reinstall it, and see if it's still there. If yes,
I'll send yast2 logs, and whatever you want by booting from the rescue CD.
Comment 11 peter czanik 2005-09-01 08:03:54 UTC
It's still here in beta4. I will add YaST2 logs. The strange thing is, that when
CD1 is in the drive (like during installation), then "boot from HDD" works, I
get the GRUB menu installed on the HDD. But it's not found, when I boot directly
the HDD.

Comment 13 Jiri Srain 2005-09-01 08:51:31 UTC
This time it is a duplicate of known problem (wrong permission of one of
binaries).
