Description Stanislav Brabec 2005-08-11 10:37:38 UTC
Thinking about resolution configuration, we shoul improve its usability:

1) Resapplet "Configure" menu option should probably call
gnome-display-properties, not "gnomesu yast2 x11" (or be able to call both).

2) "Configure Display Settings" should be moved to gnome-display-properties.

3) resolution in gnome-display-properties should be optionally X-server
specific, not host specific. This is very annoying in heterogenous enterprise
environment with one server and many different displays. This is upstream bug
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=167976

And finally, nautilus behavior is very ugly after login on display with smaller
size. This is an old upstream bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106599

I think we should leave this for 10.0
Comment 2 JP Rosevear 2006-05-09 14:27:49 UTC
Stanislav, now that we have the sax2 button in the CC I think we should actually drop gnome-display-properties. This gives use resapplet for dynamic switching (like projectors) and sax2 for more permanent resolution changes.

What do you think?
Comment 3 Stanislav Brabec 2006-05-09 14:38:54 UTC
Permanent resolution change for single user (without need to know a root password) still have a meaning.

This function can be optionally moved to gdm (I guess it is somewhere in GNOME bugzilla for years altogether with a bit depth selection).
Comment 4 JP Rosevear 2006-05-09 18:08:37 UTC
Resapplet remembers the resolution settings you've set, making me even more confident we can do away with gnome-display-properties.
Comment 5 Anna Dirks 2006-05-10 15:18:07 UTC
I'm with Stanislaw, I guess -- though JP's points are well taken. I see the following reasons to keep g-d-p.

1) it is more accessible than resapplet. It uses a separate window (instead of just a pop-up menu), which makes it easier to operate on.

2) it has a hook-in to the help system, unlike resapplet. This could be addressed by adding a help option to resapplet, of course.

3) if you do something wild like customize your panel, resapplet might not be quite so easy to access as it is by default. Having one more permanent userlevel option seems the safest bet.

All this said, I am probably being a bit of an old stick in the mud.
Comment 6 JP Rosevear 2006-05-11 13:45:29 UTC
I'm unclear on your proposal then Anna. Keep all 3? If so should resapplet point at g-d-p instead of sax2.
Comment 7 Stanislav Brabec 2006-05-11 14:53:41 UTC
The bad things happed, when you have to use two different virtual terminals and you don't have root permissions - remembering of the default resolution should be DISPLAY dependent and you should call display's SaX, not host's SaX. None of current GUIs is able to do it - see the original report and http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=167976
Comment 8 JP Rosevear 2006-05-16 21:33:23 UTC
So I've reviewed this a bit, I think the main thing now for code 10 is what to do about the 2 items in the control center.
Comment 9 Stanislav Brabec 2006-05-17 09:52:52 UTC
I guess that move resolution preferences from Hardware to Look and Feel (or Personal) and add SaX Display Settings to hardware can be intuitive.

And maybe change resapplet menu item behavior.

The sax guys tell me sax is on the way out because of the new xrandr's. There are also several gnome native tool designs like:
http://www.gnome.org/~clarkbw/designs/monitor-resolution-settings/

The could be an extension of resapplet.
Comment 12 Vincent Untz 2008-03-03 14:38:44 UTC
There's some code to update gnome-display-properties to the new randr1.2 world. Do we want this for 11.0?

See http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnomecc-list/2008-February/msg00013.html

(we also need to do some randr1.2 work on resapplet, I guess)

Any news on this, or is it to late?
Comment 14 Federico Mena Quintero 2008-08-07 21:43:12 UTC
Marking as fixed, since this is already in place in 11.0.
