Bugzilla – Bug 104410
The Sound system dies after some time playing
Last modified: 2005-08-31 08:31:06 UTC
The sound system dies on my PC after playing 4 or 5 songs encoded as Ogg-Vorbis. In XMMS it tells that me that it can't access my sound hardware, while other apps (Amarok, Kaffeine) just hangs. After clean system restart, I can play another 5 songs before sound dies. I don't know which component causes such failure, but several are possible to cause that: SuSe's Yast, AC97/VIA driver, KDE Arts Sound Server, ... My system: OS: SuSE Linux 10.0 BETA1 CPU: AMD Sempron 2400+ Audio: VIA 8237 (AC97 controller) Chipset: VIA KM400 RAM: 1 GB Graphics: nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Since I'm pretty much a beginner to SuSE Linux, so I can't isolate the problem. -Please Help !!! -Fenix*NBK*, 12.aug.2005.
Try "killall knotify" once. Looks like a bug of knotify which keeps opening sound devices and reopen again.
Well, yes !!! "killall knotify" command solved my problem !!! However this bug still remains "critical" because it may drive out noobs, like myself :) (from this distro, or even from all Linux distros) <- that's NOT my case! please fix the problem in BETA2.
This one should be fixed. It might be slipped out from beta2, but already in STABLE.

I'm using beta3 and still have the same problem: After some time, no sound is available anymore. It still seems to be a problem of knotify causing problems. I restarted knotify from the command line and now see the following error messages: auto_sink: Could not load polyp Cannot open client akode: ALSA fragment-size: 237
