The default resolution (1280x1024) blanks my LCD during installation. Simptomes
are the same, as with too high resolution or too high frequency. It is an Acer
AL1713.

I'll assume 1280x1024 is correct and with 'during' you mean right when  
the kernel starts (not when X11 starts).  
  
Unfortunately I've no control over the timing the BIOS uses. It's typically  
very conservative at 60Hz. Sorry, nothing I can do.
