Description Michael Radziej 2005-08-17 16:40:08 UTC
I installed on a system with "NVIDIA NV34GL [Quadro FX 500/600 PCI]" and
installed YOU patches (also the NVIDIA one). As a result, 3d support defaults to
be activated. But, after the installation finished, the system hangs with a dead
kernel (no reaction whatsoever). I press hard reset and boot into bootlevel 3,
but when I start the graphic setup from text yast, it freezes again.

Perhaps I'm naive about the NVIDIA patch, but that's what end users will do. I
propose to deactivate 3d support by default or explicitely ask the user about it.

I will attach YaST logs and hwinfo output. I'm also going to doublecheck whether
this is really the default behaviour.

Please boot into runlevel 3 and attach the result of nvidia-bug-report.sh.
BTW, you can quite easily change back to nv driver with "switch2nv", when the
nvidia driver does *not* work for you. There's no way to disable 3D support
when the nvidia driver is in use.
Comment 5 Michael Radziej 2005-08-17 18:00:36 UTC
In the meantime I reinstalled to check if this is persistent. Now it's getting
weird, since this time I'm not even allowed to enable 3d-support. I made two
things different: First, I didn't install the MS fonts (patch), second I did not
click "run YaST control center" at the end of installation.

I'll attach the YaST logs and hwinfo from the second run, and also
nvidia-bug-report.sh (I'm not sure if this makes sense now, but for any case).
Then I'll let it reinstall over night. Better let it rest until tomorrow and see
what happens. It might have been just a random particle, or perhaps something
with the "run YaST control center" is wrong.

Comment 8 Michael Radziej 2005-08-17 18:05:16 UTC
there is no nvidia-bug-report.sh in the PATH (second run).
I'll leave it on NEEDINFO until after I had another try with "run YaST control
center".

output of nvidia-bug-report.sh

Hehe, I hit the bug again. But I don't think that it's got anything to do with
the "run YaST control center", because now the 3d support was available also in
the install YaST, and it was not in the second run.

In case you find these YaST logs useful.

Stefan, if you need access to the machine, it's "cohen" in my office.
Comment 12 Stefan Dirsch 2005-08-18 17:09:10 UTC
The script behind the NVIDIA driver patch is still for the driver version of
Beta1 and cannot work with Beta2. Just verified. Rudi/Harald?

at least
/mounts/mirror-rw/SuSE/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/10.0/scripts/fetchnvidia.sh
is correct already, just let the mirrors catch up.
