According to an announcement on http://www.inkscape.org the version
0.42 is buggy.
There is version 0.42.2 available on
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93438

From release notes:

     * Fixed bug when opening filenames with international characters

  In 0.42.1:
     * Stroke width spin button no longer gets "stuck"
     * Fixed crash when deleting virgin flowtext
     * Properly detect libgc at configure time
