Bugzilla – Bug 113525
Amarok - Fails to Play OGG Files
Last modified: 2005-08-27 23:34:45 UTC
When I click on a .OGG audio file, Amarok 1.3 eagerly opens to play it. However, for some reason, it gives me an error in the bottom right hand side of the application and fails to play the file. Here is the error over a yellow background: "Some media could not be loaded (not playable)." It did not matter if I opened the OGG file by clicking it from Konqueror, by going to the "Actions" menu and then selecting it from "Play Media..." or any other way. It always gave me this error. I was really surprised that an open source format like OGG would not have the codecs necessary to play. It could not be due to legal issues as is the case with MP3, DVD, AVI, Flash, Real, Java... etc. Therefore, I tried another program, Kaffeine and it played the OGG files without problems on my Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS. BTW: I know this isn't the best place to ask. However, will the non-free version of SUSE 10 possibly have some proprietary formats ready to go by default?
Which sound engine did you use in amarok? Helix?
I'm not sure, but I changed nothing in Amarok. So it's whatever was default. I'll check soon.
I just checked and under Engine -> Sound System it reads: "<no engine>". Obviously, this is the problem. However, I did not remove any packages from a default KDE installation and so I do not know why it would not have had an engine installed already.
Okay, I installed the Amarok-xine-1.3 engine and selected it for the sounds ystem of the program. It works perfectly now. But it really should be installed by default.
I jsut checked and the standard 1.9 GB KDE install does indeed install Amarok without an engine. The amarok-xine-1.3 engine was not checked. This should really be changed. After all, the amarok-xine-1.3 engine is just arond 1/10 of a mb.
Alright, thanks for your analysis! This bug will be fixed with the next beta. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 112945 ***
