When I open "My computer" and try to open any of the partitions from my USB HDD,
all show just an empty directory. Opening the same partitons from /media/*
folders in konqueror, or any other means of access are fine.

does the konqueor wheel rotate? I don't have a USB HDD handy, so I can't 
really test ;( 
 
Are the partitions displyed mounted in the 'my computer' folder (i.e. have 
they a green arrow attached?)

Yes, it rotates, but nothing happens (at least nothing in the past five minutes.

It's mixed. An NTFS partition on the USB HDD has the green arrow (but can not be
listed due to bug #102918 ). A ReiserFS and a vfat partition do not have the
green arrow attached, and it does not change, when I use "mount" from the right
click menu.

can you please check 10.1 betas somewhen? We changed this dramatically, so whatever was your problem will very likely no longer be there
