Description Beau Steward 2005-09-02 17:08:07 UTC
I'm running SuSE 10.0 Beta 3 on a HP Pavilion ZE2000z. Mainboard is ati radeon
xpress 200m, cpu is amd turion 64 ml-30.

When shutting down or rebooting, it seems towards the end of the shutdown
process it just stops. The screen is blank so I can't provide too accurate
details as to what's going on. It doesn't reboot if reboot is requested, nor
does it turn off if a shutdown is requested. Also, in order to regain control
of my laptop, I have to remove all power, or press and hold the power button
for hard power down.
Comment 1 Beau Steward 2005-09-03 18:30:38 UTC
This is not resolved in beta 4.
Comment 2 Andreas Kleen 2005-09-05 20:25:55 UTC
Please attach boot.msg.

When you remove the vga=... line in /boot/grub/menu.lst and run
klogconsole -l8 -r0 and then do the shutdown what are the last messages
you see when it hangs?
Comment 3 Beau Steward 2005-09-06 00:29:09 UTC
drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: input irq status -32 received
Restarting system
.
machine restart

The first line is scrolled probably for a couple of screen lengths, then it goes
to the last 3 lines. After a short while, the display corrupts (currently
showing vertical lines in pairs) and I have to cycle the power.

Comment 5 Beau Steward 2005-09-06 00:39:37 UTC
I just did a test reboot without usb devices plugged in and didn't receive the
scrolling output of the hid-core.c line, but it still hangs after machine restart.
Comment 6 Andreas Kleen 2005-09-06 00:50:35 UTC
Does it work with reboot=force ?
Comment 7 Beau Steward 2005-09-06 02:50:15 UTC
Adding reboot=force to kernel parameters seems to allow it to reboot, but what
about halting?
Comment 8 Beau Steward 2005-09-14 06:50:24 UTC
I apologize but this being set to Minor is not accurate. I've just been able to
get my hands on RC1 and the problem persists (I forgot to put reboot=force on
the kernel parameters during boot from the cd). Also, reboot=force does NOT help
with halting the system.
Comment 9 Andreas Kleen 2005-09-14 07:37:07 UTC
Reboot/halt problems are not major.

Please switch to the text console and do klogconsole -l7 -r0 and then
halt and tell us what the last messages on the console is on halt.

Also do the same for a reboot without reboot=force
Comment 10 Beau Steward 2005-09-16 17:17:31 UTC
I was doing some testing for another bug and found that this bug appears in the
vanilla 2.6.13 sources, but not 2.6.12 sources. I haven't had a chance to check
halt and reboot messages yet, I'll have to do that later. Thought I would put
this update in before I leave for the day.
Comment 11 Beau Steward 2005-09-17 16:52:15 UTC
Restarting system
.
machine restart

This is what is displayed when rebooting before display corruption and lockup.
Halting shows a similar message, ending with a message concerning shutting down
hda. I will need to go through several halts and reboots to get the exact
messages since I don't have a way to attach serial console and will need to
transcribe the messages manually. Unfortunately that will have to be done later
tonight or tomorrow.
Comment 12 Beau Steward 2005-09-17 16:54:15 UTC
BTW, this MIGHT be related to bug 115095 as it seems both this and the suspend
to disk problems did not exist in kernel 2.6.12.
Comment 13 Beau Steward 2005-09-23 07:03:38 UTC
This bug appears to start with kernel 2.6.13-rc1. I apologize that I still have
not gotten to the transcription of the messages, I've been very busy. I will try
to have this by this weekend.
Comment 14 Thomas Renninger 2005-11-04 08:53:28 UTC
Could you try the kernel from:
ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/kotd/10.0-x86_64/SL100_BRANCH/kernel-default-2.6.13-SL100_BRANCH_20051103105705.x86_64.rpm
There has been a minor change in the shutdown routines. Maybe it also helps for your machine...
Comment 15 Beau Steward 2005-11-05 21:01:40 UTC
Downloaded kotd for nov 4 and shutdown and reboot both work without reboot=force. Awesome work.
Comment 16 Olaf Kirch 2006-01-03 13:21:37 UTC
Can this be closed?
Comment 17 Beau Steward 2006-01-04 07:17:23 UTC
Yeah, sorry.
Comment 18 Joachim Deguara 2006-03-29 13:42:27 UTC
closing it like it should be
