Error installing grub: "Error 5: Partition table invalid or corrupt"
Last modified: 2005-09-08 08:32:29 UTC
During installation, i get the following error when installing grub: GNU GRUB version 0.96 (640K lower / 3072K upper memory) [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename. ] grub> root (hd0,5) Error 5: Partition table invalid or corrupt grub> install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0,5) /boot/grub/stage2 0x8000 (hd0,5)/boot/grub/menu.lst Error 12: Invalid device requested grub> install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0,2) /boot/grub/stage2 0x8000 (hd0,5)/boot/grub/menu.lst Error 12: Invalid device requested grub> quit I re-initialized this machine (Thinkpad T43) from a harddisk image before starting the installation, the only non-standard thing i was doing was setting the Windows partition to the minimum possible size. The machine is sitting in the shelf behind my desk, i did not continue after this error.

Partitioning -> fehr, bootloader config -> jsrain
do you need anything from this machine? otherwise i would restore it with the XP image and then retry with beta4plusplus
No, the logs should be enogh, the problem was caused by changing the resize parameters a second time. Will have a look at this later. If you simply use the suggestions made by YaST2 it should work.

beta4++ showed the same problem, but i again resized to the smallest possible size. I will try again with a simple "click-through-install"

Should be fixed with yast2-strorage-2.12.26
Sorry fix is in yast2-storage-2.12.27
Will be fixed in RC2.
