Using an exchange account.  If I "trash"/delete a message, and then select a
different message, evolution locks up with "Retrieving message 0000xxxxxxxxxx
(...)" in the status bar.  Seems OK if I don't delete anything.

This probably means the evolution-exchange crashed. Can you please try attaching
the gdb traces for evolution-exchange process while you see this ?

See bug 113097 for the latest gdb trace.  Evolution-exchange-storage still crashing.  This has been going on for 2 years now!

Since it is the same trace you are getting I am marking this as a duplicate of
bug #113097
