Can you play sound in general, e.g. does the following work:
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav
Comment 2 Dominique Leuenberger 2005-09-11 13:31:25 UTC
Just an idea, as I had the same problem using my hardware (onboard SiS Sound
chip 7012)

My solution was as follows:
starting kmix
changing to switches
and activate them as follows:
- Headphone Jack sense on
- Line Jack Sense off

The others in the list didn't make any change for me, but you might try to play
with them too.

Are you trying to play videos with an MP3-audio-track?
Did you check that your soundcard-configuration is working before, like Andreas
said? (rcalsasound start && aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav).

If not, this is a problem with your sound-driver, which is not unlikely with an
onboard SiS-Chip... in this case you'll have to provide more information.

Perhaps I have the same error with a SBlive!.
Amarok refuses to make a sound, but with aplay I can hear the wav-file.
Strangely, when I play an mp3 in amarok, the progress bar moves way to fast, a
song is over after perhaps 5 seconds. Then the next song is selected and played
(a stupid amarok behaviour by the way, ruining all statistics since a lot of
songs get "played" while the sound system is not working).

I have an onboard sound chip, but I deleted its configuration in yast, so that
aplay now selects the Sound Blaster
Comment 5 Michael Gross 2005-09-16 11:37:43 UTC
This sounds more like a problem with amarok (or even more likely with the used
libraries) itself than with the sound-subsystem.

Takashi: Is the assignment of this bug OK?

Just to be sure, you could provide some line sof your syslog:
% tail -200 /var/log/messages > messages.txt
(after you tried to play a song or run a video)

This might give us a clue. Please attach the log here, don't inline it.
Comment 6 Hans-Joachim Daniels 2005-09-16 14:56:07 UTC
Nothing is written to /var/log/messages. And amarok does not print anything to
the console. But funnily, when clicking the X for closing the window of amarok,
a system sound is played together with showing the dialog.
juk in comparison refuses to play songs, which is not that much more helpful ...

What actually *did* help, was installing the mad-packages from packman. Now I
can use amarok to play mp3s.

It sounds like a typical blocking problem with OSS, which should have been in
the latest version. Remember that helix engine is using OSS instead of ALSA
unless you run it with aoss wrapper.

Comment 8 Oliver Wilson 2005-10-07 13:04:54 UTC
This seems similar to 118967.
I have a similar problem - sound is crippled despite correct modules loaded.
Command line stuff works perfectly; xine / arts etc won't load however.

Takashi, no activity here since long. Can we close this?
Comment 10 Takashi Iwai 2006-06-13 10:40:41 UTC
Yeah, the situation must have changed much in 10.1.
