Bugzilla – Bug 116791
After applying the YOU Security update for the kernel, Xen is dead
Last modified: 2005-12-20 20:10:28 UTC
I applied the YOU update for the kernel. Now upon picking Xen at boot-time there is a kernel-panic during boot. I can obviously fix this manually, but it seems like YOU should notice & "do the right thing" in the Xen case...
If YOU should do something special (what?) -> mir. Michael, if it's XEN/kernel problem, reassign to XEN/kernel people.
Billy, can you please provide logs (tar the complete /var/log/YaST directory)? What was your configuration? (Did you run it on XEN domain 0, or a different domain? Which domain crashed?) Please also take a look at the XEN and system logs if they contain something valuable. Did you get a kernel trace? @aj: Please check if you consider the severity appropriate.
Created attachment 49883 [details] Tarball of the /var/log/YaST2 directory
Hi, The configuration of the system was pretty much a default install with Gnome + the developer tools. I had picked Xen at install-time and booted with the Xen option from Grub, but hadn't created any domains as such. I then applied the YOU update for the kernel and could no longer boot Xen. The main error during boot is : kernel BUG at drivers/xen/balloon/balloon.c:463 (dealloc_pte_fin)! [ I would have given you a serial dump, but the serial port on the machine is dead ] Billy.
That's ok. Please remember to check the checkbox "This comment provides the needed information", else it might lose attention. (I've done it for you ;-)
Etoulas, can you please verify this and then assign back to me?
Billy, we tried this with rc2 and it worked. There were some problems with xen in beta4, so I think this has been fixed. Please update to rc2 or later (currently we have rc4 here) and reopen if the bug persists. Thanks to etoulas for testing this.
Hi, I can't find anything newer than RC1 on the download page or mirrors? Is there somewhere to download RC2 or later? Billy.
The goldmaster will be made available early october.
Michael Radziej : "Billy, we tried this with rc2 and it worked. There were some problems with xen in beta4, so I think this has been fixed. Please update to rc2 or later (currently we have rc4 here) and reopen if the bug persists." Andreas Jaeger : "The goldmaster will be made available early october." How do I test the solution offered by Michael? Or am I just to wait for a month and hope for the best?
Either use RC1 or wait three weeks. We're planning to make further updates for Xen as well, we might release something sooner but need further time to test.
This really sounds like a kernel problem. ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/KOTD also has the up-to-date (Goldmaster and newer) kernel. Could you please try that?
Billy: I wasn't aware that rc2 or later is not available to you, sorry. Then try rc1 with the kernel from comment #12, that's as close as we can get for now.
Ok - I'm downloading the kernel images now. I will post an update once they are in place.
Installed RC1 with a default install + xen + c/developer. System boots ok. Then installed the kotd and rebooted. On picking the Xen option I get a fraction of a second of the kernel printing something, then the system reboots. Picking the regular kernel boots fine. No other configuration of the system was done. The system is a Dell Optiplex GX270 if that helps any : http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx?c=uk&id=optix_gx270
Which kotd have you been using (uname -rpv should be enough)?
2.6.13-20050914161152-default #1 Wed Sep 14 16:11:52 UTC 2005 i686
It's not a YOU but a xen or kernel bug.
Agreed. Testing with the final xen (6715) aka kernel-xen-2.6.13-15 would be useful. But we'll indeed publish updates soon.
I assume this is fixed.
