Description e j 2020-08-08 22:35:27 UTC
After update to kernel 5.7 I can no longer establish a functional plasma session. On boot the login screen appears but has strange behavior where objects flicker do not refresh properly. I can select user and enter passwrd but upon login only a black screen with mouse cursor is visible. Ctl+Alt+Bksp kills session and returns to login screen. I can select Icewm and login successfully but display has intermittent flickering.

I was able to boot from previous kernel 5.6 and everything worked fine but now I've lost that snapshot.

Also tried kernel 5.8 and the issue remains. Not sure if this is plasma, kernel or other issue. Can ssh in if needed.

Anything I can do to debug?

User on forums.opensuse.org provided me with kernel-default-5.6.14-1.6.x86_64.rpm. After installing and boot with this kernel everything is working as expected. DM greeter login screen behaves normally and I am able to initiate Plasma (Wayland) session. Clearly something got broken in 5.7, 5.8 kernel.

As indicated in reporter's forum thread
https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/542872-Plasma-desktop-black-screen-with-cursor-only-after-update-to-kernel-5-7
this happens to my Plasma with compositing enabled using Radeon HD8570 GPU, modesetting DDX and KDM3.

Just to confirm that I was able to install kernel-default-5.6.14-1.6.x86_64.rpm and observed normal behavior with no other changes. After installing and booting with this kernel everything is working as expected. DM greeter login screen behaves normally and I am able to initiate Plasma (Wayland) session. Seems to confirm something got broken in 5.7, 5.8 kernel. Reassign to kernel.

System updated to Tumbleweed 20200813 and kernel 5.8.1-3.1.g846658e.
Broken plasma still persists!

Plasma still functions normally under kernel 5.6.14-1-default

Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20200813
KDE Plasma Version: 5.19.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.73.0
Qt Version: 5.15.0
Kernel Version: 5.6.14-1-default (WORKING)
Kernel Version: 5.8.1-3.1.g846658e-default (STILL BROKEN! NO PLASMA)
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 2 × Intel® Celeron® 2955U @ 1.40GHz
Memory: 7.6 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa DRI Intel® HD Graphics

Forgotten one, sorry about that.

e j, is it still happening with the latest kernel in TW?

CCing Takashi, who might have met with i915 driver issues in 5.7 and 5.8 kernels already.

Unfortunately it is still not working correctly on latest update:

Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20201227
KDE Plasma Version: 5.20.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.77.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2
Kernel Version: 5.10.1-1-default
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 2 × Intel® Celeron® 2955U @ 1.40GHz
Memory: 7.6 GiB of RAM

Although the behavior is improved to the extent that I can actually start a plasma session (with random screen flashing and strange rastering of black lines, triangles etc). As a quick test I was able to run firefox with close to normal behavior outside of some flickering/flashing boxes, but launching chrome really causes problems and renders the session unusable. Restarting X doesn't seem to fix things once it becomes non-functional. So I'm back to kernel 5.6.

If there's anything I can do to help sort this out please let me know.

And once again I have forgotten this bug. I am really sorry.

Is there anything new? (sorry for the stupid question, but it has been a year)
Comment 10 Felix Miata 2022-02-12 08:05:23 UTC
I just tried on comment #8 nvidia host p5bse, and SDDM won't show a cursor in username or password fields, or let me type in them. Startx is blocked for ordinary users. Startx brings up a nice working as expected Plasma session as root. On radeon host fi965, SDDM half works (initializes with touchscreen keyboard instead of normal greeter), and Plasma is working as expected. Whatever the problem was seems probably to have disappeared.
