Description Joel Carlson 2005-09-20 20:09:43 UTC
Our Best Data V.92 external USB dialup modem detected as Conexant Systems
(Rockwell) USB ACF Modem won't connect to internet (works great in Suse 9.3).
Mode is showing as unknown. /var/log/messages already submitted with Bug 117948.
This only applies to our HP ZE2113US laptop. Dialup connection & reboot works
good in standard 32 bit, MSI MB, midtower computer.
Comment 2 Marian Jancar 2005-09-21 16:11:16 UTC
Please submit `lsusb -v' and `cat /proc/bus/usb/devices', preferably from both
the 9.3 and 10.0.

The 10.0 kernel doesn't see the modem at all. Please try to reload usbcore with
old_scheme_first=1 and submit dmesg, both with old_scheme_first=0 and 1.

usbmap on HP ZE2113US laptop

Don't know how to reload usbcore. Need detailed step-by-step instructions.
kinternet only shows the usb modem (modem0) as interface. Suse 9.3 on same HP
ZE2113US laptop shows the usb modem, ethernet & wlan (internal HP modem not yet
working with Suse 9.3).
Comment 5 Marian Jancar 2005-10-03 18:55:30 UTC
`modprobe -r <name>' unloads drivers, the usbcore will be used by some other
drivers, you need to `modprobe -r ' them first. Lsmod will tell you wich driver
is used by what, and you will likely need to umount usbfs. The following could
work in typical case:

# unload
modprobe -r usbhid
modprobe -r ohci_hcd
modprobe -r uhci_hcd
modprobe -r ehci_hcd
umount /proc/bus/usb
modprobe -r usbcore

#load
modprobe usbcore old_scheme_first=1
mount -t usbfs usbfs /proc/bus/usb
modprobe ehci_hcd
modprobe ohci_hcd
modprobe uhci_hcd
Comment 6 Joel Carlson 2005-10-04 17:29:25 UTC
Important:

We tried the entries above and USB modem is still not working. SUSE should test
an HP ZE2113US Laptop or equal at their facilities and fix this critical flaw so
it is not in the final version.

Note: This also applies to standard desktop computers such as our MSI MB
midtower. In SUSE Linux 9.3 this was not a problem. We will be demonstrating
SUSE Linux 10 on this laptop at Raincoast 2005, http://www.raincoast.info , this
weekend & had hoped to have this problem fixed or the final product we ordered
on 22 Sep 2005, order #106736845, FedEx'd to us before this weekend.

Thanks,

Joel Carlson

Comment 7 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2005-10-06 17:11:23 UTC
But the modem is bound to the driver properly, why do you think it is not working?

If you want to send me a laptop to test this with, I would appreciate it :)
Comment 8 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2005-10-06 17:14:36 UTC
Also, is this still a problem on the final version of 10.0?
Comment 9 Marian Jancar 2005-10-06 17:21:34 UTC
to comment#7
The attachment contains listings from both the 9.3 and 10.0, on 10.0 the modem
is missing.
Comment 10 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2005-10-06 17:32:49 UTC
Does "modprobe cdc-acm" fix the problem on 10.0?
Comment 11 Marian Jancar 2005-10-06 17:41:34 UTC
I guess not, the cdc_acm has no device to bind to.
Comment 12 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2005-10-06 18:02:44 UTC
Ok, what does the kernel report when you plug the device in?

Run 'dmesg -c' before you plug the device in, and then please attach the output
of 'dmesg' after you plug the device in.

Also, does this work on the final 10.0 release?

Comment 14 Marian Jancar 2005-10-07 06:44:00 UTC
This is different from 105621, there is a kernel problem:

Comment 15 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2005-10-07 16:52:07 UTC
Ok, you are correct, sorry, was going through marking a lot of duplicate bugs
yesterday.

So, I still want to see the kernel log when the device is plugged in the
first time.

And no, you don't need to unload the usb core to change the options to it, you
can just write to the /sys/module/usbcore/paramaters/PARAMATER file (where
PARAMATER is the option you wish to change.)
Comment 16 Joel Carlson 2005-12-13 18:40:52 UTC
With SUSE 10.1 A3 we can connect to the internet with this USB dialup modem but the speed is very slow- less than half of normal dialup speed. This needs to be fixed.
Comment 17 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2005-12-13 20:17:21 UTC
Great, care to open a new bug for this then? I'm guessing that this specific one is now fixed, so I'm closing it.
