Bugzilla – Bug 1184193
VUL-0: CVE-2021-28964: kernel-source: race condition in get_old_root function in fs/btrfs/ctree.c
Last modified: 2022-12-23 13:28:21 UTC
rh#1941804 A race condition was discovered in get_old_root in fs/btrfs/ctree.c in the Linux kernel through 5.11.8. It allows attackers to cause a denial of service (BUG) because of a lack of locking on an extent buffer before a cloning operation. Reference and upstream patch: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=dbcc7d57bffc0c8cac9dac11bec548597d59a6a5 References: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1941804 http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2021-28964 https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2021-28964 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2021-28964 https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=dbcc7d57bffc0c8cac9dac11bec548597d59a6a5
Reassigned to the patch author :)
Why is this a security issue? It's a race that can happen in very hard to trigger scenarios. Why is this one considered a CVE and not all the other bug fixes that fix other deadlock cases or crashes? If this one is a security issue, then about 80% of the btrfs bug fixes would be too, no?
If the bug is practically impossible to trigger by normal user (or conditionally by root) *at will*, we may try to dispute the CVE entry. But this has to be clarified properly. If that's the case, please ask our security team to handle to dispute the CVE. The process might take long. And, yes, any such bugs that may crash the system could be registered as security matters, if anyone wants to enter them. But not many people want that, obviously, so it didn't happen, so far :)
(In reply to Takashi Iwai from comment #3) > If the bug is practically impossible to trigger by normal user (or > conditionally by root) *at will*, we may try to dispute the CVE entry. But not many people want > that, obviously, so it didn't happen, so far :) Indeed. It's something I would be backporting soon to SLE kernels anyway. But really, nowadays there are very odd choices about what can be classified as a CVE. Given most of my time is spent finding and fixing bugs that lead to crashes and other really bad things, I might well be considered a security expert I suppose :)
