"CheckHardware --3D" is missing in the generated glest.desktop File. In the 
PDB for glest 3D is specified. Looking at torcs and other .desktop Files the  
mechanism via PDB works and none of them contains "CheckHardware <option>" in 
the .desktop file of the sources.

AFAIK the desktop files are generated by the update-desktop-files package.
