Description Ofir Geri 2005-09-24 21:15:19 UTC
I've installed openSuSE RC1 and found out that useable Hebrew fonts aren't
included. Most Linux systems use the Culmus (http://culmus.sf.net) fonts as
default Hebrew fonts.
Comment 1 Karl Eichwalder 2005-09-28 11:59:51 UTC
Mike, please comment.
Comment 2 Mike Fabian 2005-09-28 21:03:38 UTC
I wanted to add the culmus fonts for SuSE 10.0, but couldn't find time
to do it.

I'll add them soon.

Comment 3 Mike Fabian 2005-09-29 13:11:09 UTC
culmus package submitted for the next version of SuSE Linux (10.1).
Comment 4 Mike Fabian 2005-09-29 13:29:13 UTC
Updated "selectio" package submitted for the next version
of SuSE Linux.

"culmus" has been added to the relevant Hebrew sections in order to
install the culmus fonts by default on SuSE Linux 10.1 if the
installation is done in Hebrew or Hebrew support is selected in YaST2.

Comment 6 Karl Eichwalder 2005-10-05 03:24:25 UTC
thanks a million!
Comment 7 Ofir Geri 2005-12-13 08:45:13 UTC
I've installed 10.1 alpha 3 and chosen Hebrew as setup language but it didn't install culmus.
Also, it should set "Nachlieli CLM" as the default Hebrew font and use it in the installation (it's used before the first reboot, but then a terrible font is used instead).
Comment 8 Mike Fabian 2005-12-13 11:06:30 UTC
It is not possible that "Nachlieli CLM" is used before the first
reboot because it is not in the installation images. I.e. you must be
mistaken here. The only Hebrew fonts in the installation image are

FreeSans.ttf
FreeSansBold.ttf
FreeSansBoldOblique.ttf
FreeSansOblique.ttf

from the freefont package.

I think it doesn't make sense to add more Hebrew fonts to the instsys,
the instsys should remain small to be able install on machines with
little memory.

Comment 9 Mike Fabian 2005-12-13 11:25:54 UTC
The culmus font package is unfortunately missing on the 5 CD set for
SUSE 10.1 alpha3. I added Rüdiger Oertel to the CC, maybe he can
comment if it is possible to add it to the CD set. As 5 CDs are not
enough for all the packages we have, it is always a tradeoff to decide
what to include.

The only other free Hebrew fonts we have are in the package
"freefont". These were the fonts you saw during the first stage of
the installation. The package "freefont" is also on the CD set, but
unfortunately it was not installed when the installation was done in
Hebrew because there was no entry in the "selectio" package to install
this for Hebrew. Stefan Dirsch has fixed this now, i.e. in future both
the "culmus" and the "freefont" packages will be installed when the
installation is done in Hebrew *if* they are available on the CDs at
all. Installing both cannot hurt, adding "freefont" to the list of
packages to install when Hebrew is selected gives a reasonable
fallback if the culmus package is missing on the CDs for whatever
reason.
Comment 10 Mike Fabian 2005-12-13 11:42:52 UTC
Ofir Geri> Also, it should set "Nachlieli CLM" as the default Hebrew font

That must be done in in the "<prefer>" lists in the fontconfig
package which are in /etc/fonts/suse-post-user.conf.

There are 3 prefer lists for

    - serif
    - sans-serif
    - monospace

I guess it is OK if I set the defaults like this:

    serif: Frank Ruehl CLM
    sans-serif: Nachlieli CLM
    monospace: Miriam Mono CLM

OK?

Comment 11 Mike Fabian 2005-12-13 12:23:11 UTC
I added the setup as described in comment #10 to the fontconfig
package and submitted it to STABLE (current snapshot of SUSE Linux).
Should show up in the next alpha/beta release.

fontconfig packages for SUSE 10.0 with this change are here:

ftp://ftp.suse.de/pub/projects/m17n/10.0/

Comment 12 Ofir Geri 2005-12-13 12:52:34 UTC
The fonts configuration sounds good to me.
Also, after testing FreeSans, I see no reason to use Culmus in the installation,
but it is very important to include Culmus in the installation CDs, for the sake of a whole nation (it's just one megabyte)!
By the way, are the Culmus-fancy fonts included in the Culmus package?
Comment 13 Mike Fabian 2005-12-13 13:44:32 UTC
Ofir Geri> The fonts configuration sounds good to me.

Thank you.

Ofir Geri> but it is very important to include Culmus in the
Ofir Geri> installation CDs, for the sake of a whole nation (it's just
Ofir Geri> one megabyte)!

Yes, only 865 kByte. Rüdiger, can these fonts be included in the CD set?

Ofir Geri> By the way, are the Culmus-fancy fonts included in the
Ofir Geri> Culmus package?

Yes.

Comment 14 Mike Fabian 2005-12-13 15:07:21 UTC
I found that the reason why the culmus fonts were not yet included on
the CDs was that they were still in the queue of packages to be
checked for legal problems. The fonts are GPL and most likely they are
perfectly fine to be included on the CDs, but the checks were not yet
completed.

I'm adding Jürgen Weigert <jw@suse.de> to the CC:, he knows best
about our legal checking procedures.

Comment 15 Mike Fabian 2005-12-13 15:11:06 UTC
Reassigning bug to Lars Rupp <lrupp@suse.de> to add the package
to the CD set as soon as the legal checks are completed.
Comment 16 Lars Vogdt 2005-12-13 15:23:48 UTC
since culmus still has state "candidate" in pdb, it wouldn't be included in Alpha4. so stay tuned for the next release...
Comment 17 Ofir Geri 2005-12-13 15:52:15 UTC
What is pdb?
Does next release means some beta or 10.2?
Comment 18 Mike Fabian 2005-12-13 16:09:47 UTC
pdb is our SUSE internal package database. That the package is marked
as "candidate" there means that the legal checking whether the license
is acceptable is still not finished.

Next release means the next alpha or beta release after Alpha4.

Comment 19 Juergen Weigert 2005-12-13 16:21:22 UTC
culmus is now in state 'production' -- sorry, that we missed alpha4.
Comment 20 Lars Vogdt 2005-12-15 19:42:09 UTC
fast response ;-) so this is fixed in Alpha4
