The Software Update widget says there are updates available, so I click Install Updates, and I get this error.

Tried several times.

The fact itself that an error occurs is of course an issue, but what's even worse is that (A) there is no explanation of what the problem is, and (B) no indication to what I should do about it.

It is critical that the installation of updates is bullet-proof.

I see that if I run zypper dup from a terminal it gives more details and gives me options. The Software Updates interface should offer the same options with a nice interface. At the very, VERY least it should display a message saying something like "Run 'sudo zypper dup' in a terminal to see more details about the problem and options to fix it".

Actually, this UI is an abstraction, and it is okay if it only provides a subset of actions. There is no bullet-proof single decision that is both easy and always correct. And no, running zypper dup is not even the always best thing to do.

In your case, are you using non-standard repositories? Specifically since TW ships 1.18.5-6.1 while you have 1.18.5-6.2.

It is only ok if it points me to the next tool that provides all the actions.
If the only discoverable tool for updating the system, the one that sits in the system tray and shouts "Use me to install updates" doesn't have all the tools to fix an issue that prevents it from installing updates, it must point me to where I can find a solution.

> There is no bullet-proof single decision that is both easy and always correct.

Ok but it didn't even list the options. It didn't even give me a description of what the issues were (just "problem with <name of package>").

It's possible. Is there a command I can run to see what repositories I'm using that are non-standard? Could this have to do with non-free codecs?

zypper sl -u

> Could this have to do with non-free codecs?

Highly likely.
