Description Gianluca Gabrielli 2023-05-26 06:09:32 UTC
Copy_from_user on 64-bit versions of the Linux kernel does not implement the
__uaccess_begin_nospec allowing a user to bypass the "access_ok" check and pass
a kernel pointer to copy_from_user(). This would allow an attacker to leak
information. We recommend upgrading beyond

Comment 1 Gianluca Gabrielli 2023-05-26 06:12:00 UTC
Upstream hardening commit 74e19ef0ff8061ef55957c3abd71614ef0f42f47

Affected branches:
 - cve/linux-4.4
 - cve/linux-4.12
 - SLE12-SP5
 - cve/linux-5.3
 - SLE15-SP3
 - SLE15-SP4
 - SLE15-SP5
Comment 2 Michal Koutný 2023-05-26 18:53:39 UTC
Let me take this to port back.
Comment 4 Michal Koutný 2023-07-21 21:02:45 UTC
(In reply to Gianluca Gabrielli from comment #1)
> Affected branches:

While it appears that the commit
> 4b842e4e25b1 ("x86: get rid of small constant size cases in raw_copy_{to,from}_user()") v5.7-rc1~163^2^2~18
is the breaker (for 64b), the copy_user_generic() won't have the nospec barrier
neither and the backport of
> 74e19ef0ff80 ("uaccess: Add speculation barrier to copy_from_user()") v6.3-rc1~173
is a deep cut fix. Compare with
> 304ec1b05031 ("x86/uaccess: Use __uaccess_begin_nospec() and uaccess_try_nospec") v4.16-rc1~71^2~20

So I considered affected all branches back to cve/linux-3.0 and pushed so far:

- users/mkoutny/SLE15-SP4/bsc1211738
- users/mkoutny/cve/linux-5.3/bsc1211738
- users/mkoutny/cve/linux-4.12/bsc1211738
- users/mkoutny/cve/linux-4.4/bsc1211738
- alas cve/linux-3.0 doesn't have a backport of commit 304ec1b05031, so I push
  to respective derived branches (each have it separately, Cc: jslaby):
  - users/mkoutny/SLE11-SP4-LTSS/bsc1211738 (KBUILD)
  - users/mkoutny/SLE11-SP3-TD/bsc1211738 (KBUILD)

(the 3.0-based branches require more KABI massaging due to some 32b/64b unifying prereqs, hence not going with for-nexts yet (this has low score)).

Cc: nborisov for x86 awareness

(The oldest two are separate for reasons in the comment 4.)
