Bugzilla – Bug 1211806
ibus causes plasma lagging and freezing
Last modified: 2023-11-26 12:39:48 UTC
From time to time (sometimes once a day, sometimes every 5 minutes) plasma starts behaving strange. In the first place the keyboard is lagging, i.e. only one keystroke shows up every 20 seconds, a little bit late apps can't be started, for example systemsettings5. During time it gets worse and worse up to the point, where only killing the session and login in again is possible. The only messages in the logs (even with full debugging activated), that seem to be related are: Cyclic dependency detected between "file:///usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.notifications/contents/ui/global/Globals.qml" and "file:///usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.notifications/contents/ui/NotificationHeader.qml" and Could not find the Plasmoid for Plasma::FrameSvgItem(0x56169145c150) QQmlContext(0x56168eb742a0) QUrl("file:///usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.notifications/contents/ui/global/Globals.qml") Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20230527 KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.5 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.106.0 Qt Version: 5.15.9 Kernel Version: 6.3.2-1-default (64-bit) Graphics Platform: X11 Processors: 8 × 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz Memory: 15,0 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® Xe Graphics Manufacturer: Dell Inc. Product Name: XPS 13 9310 2-in-1
Problem still exists. Today it started with dolphin dumping core - see attachement. Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20230724 KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.6 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.108.0 Qt Version: 5.15.10 Kernel Version: 6.4.4-1-default (64-bit) Graphics Platform: X11 Processors: 8 × 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz Memory: 15,0 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® Xe Graphics Manufacturer: Dell Inc. Created attachment 868498 [details] journal with dolphin dumping core. In this situation keyboard is lagging, mouse works ok, but clicking on anything in taskmanager, logging out ... don't work. Ctrl-Alt-Fx works. I have to kill my session with loginctl and wait until all my processes have been stopped. Afterwards logging in is possible again and KDE seems to work as usual. This happens about once a day.
Problem still exists and occurs more often, sometimes two or three occurrences per evening. I still couldn't find any according messages in the journal. There are messages like plasmashell[2829]: Could not find the Plasmoid for Plasma::FrameSvgItem(0x5619b2168710) QQml Context(0x5619aef077a0) QUrl("file:///usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.notifications/contentsui/global/Globals.qml") ... kwin_x11[2768]: kwin_core: XCB error: 152 (BadDamage), sequence: 46941, resource id: 8422117, major code: 143 (DAMAGE), minor code: 3 (Subtract) but according to the net they are harmless. Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20230818 KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.7 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.108.0 Qt Version: 5.15.10 Kernel Version: 6.4.9-1-default (64-bit) Graphics Platform: X11 Processors: 8 × 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz Memory: 15,0 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® Xe Graphics Manufacturer: Dell Inc. The problem also happened after starting over with a complete new home directory. In this case I created a few links using an xfce4-terminal, when the keyboard started lagging. Up to this point the only configuration action was switching mouse buttons for left handed use.
The problem still exists. After having tested everything, I could think of, and following some advice given here in the list, I have no idea, where to go next. I moved my home directory away and started over with an empty one. For a while the problem didn't occur, but after about 10 days it was back. I created a new user - and again: For a while the problems didn't occur, but after about 10 days it was back. I used xfce4 instead of KDE - and again, ... I tested all keys and detected, that only the character keys, the numeric keys and a few special keys like escape are affected, but only, if they are used to type text. If I use them to jump to a file in dolphin or a mail in kontact by typing the first character of an element, they are working without a problem. function and cursor keys always work as expected. Still there are no entries in the journal or any other log. Sometimes the problem gets worse while trying to debug it - KDE (xfce4) functions stop working, i.e. menus are no longer shown, systemsettings can't be started, logoff does not work, ... It seems as if the GUI slowly, but steadily is dying. Changing to a console, killing the session and login back in always solves the problem - until it reoccurs, which happens a few minutes to a few days later. A complete memory check doesn't show any problem.

I uninstalled all ibus packages and the problem didn't occur within 7 days. I removed ibus' directories below .config and .cache and reinstalled the same ibus packages. If the problem won't reoccur in seven days, I'll close the bug.
Problem reoccurred. I again uninstalled all ibus packages.
Without ibus the problem didn't occur for two weeks now, so ibus indeed seems to be the culprit. I am not sure, what functionality exactly I loose without ibus, but it does not seem to be important for me. Nevertheless anyone should look into this problem IMHO.
