Bugzilla – Bug 1212233
VUL-0: CVE-2023-3164: tiff: heap-buffer-overflow in extractImageSection()
Last modified: 2024-07-12 16:30:47 UTC
CVE-2023-3164 A heap-buffer-overflow in extractImageSection() at tools/tiffcrop.c:7916 and tools/tiffcrop.c:7801. Reference: https://gitlab.com/libtiff/libtiff/-/issues/542 http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2023-3164 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2213531
No upstream fix yet. Got ASan crash on: - SUSE:SLE-12:Update - SUSE:SLE-15:Update According to the ASan stack trace, the bug is in tiffcrop tools, that SUSE:SLE-12:Update doesn't have.
(In reply to Thomas Leroy from comment #1) > No upstream fix yet. > > Got ASan crash on: > - SUSE:SLE-12:Update > - SUSE:SLE-15:Update > > According to the ASan stack trace, the bug is in tiffcrop tools, that > SUSE:SLE-12:Update doesn't have. That *SUSE:SLE-11:Update* doesn't have, sorry. So SUSE:SLE-12:Update affected, SUSE:SLE-11:Update not affected.
No progress yet. Upstream closed https://gitlab.com/libtiff/libtiff/-/issues/542 as wontfix and removed the vulnerable code in 4.6.0.
Folks, there seems to be some confusion about what this CVE refers to. CVE-2023-3164 at NVD https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2023-3164 refers to gawk. It links to https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2215930 which talks about gawk. The first comment in this bug refers to A heap-buffer-overflow in extractImageSection() at tools/tiffcrop.c:7916 and tools/tiffcrop.c:7801 and links to https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2213531 which is titled CVE-2023-3164 but refers to libtiff. https://www.suse.com/security/cve/CVE-2023-3164.html lists gawk in the title but lists the fixes in tiff. I think the libtiff links are incorrect. Please review. Thanks, Simon
