Description Thomas Leroy 2023-06-13 09:04:15 UTC
CVE-2023-3212

A flaw in the Linux Kernel found in the GFS2 file system. On corrupted gfs2 file systems the evict code can try to reference the journal descriptor structure, jdesc, after it has been freed and set to NULL. It can lead to null pointer dereference when gfs2_trans_begin being called and then fail ingfs2_evict_inode().

Comment 1 Thomas Leroy 2023-06-13 09:24:05 UTC
601ef0d52e96 (gfs2: Force withdraw to replay journals and wait for it to finish
) might introduce the proper NULL deref by setting `sdp->sd_jdesc = NULL;` in `gfs2_jindex_free()`. I think versions before this commit are not affected, instead of a possible use-after-free, but a double-check would be appreciated.

That would leave the following branches affected:
- stable
- SLE15-SP4
Comment 2 Petr Mladek 2023-06-13 09:36:40 UTC
It seems that the final patch has been added into v6.4-rc2 by
the commit 504a10d9e46bc37b23 ("gfs2: Don't deref jdesc in evict").

Thanks Petr. That actually might be use-after-free for older versions
Comment 4 Petr Mladek 2023-06-13 13:39:39 UTC
Takashi, I can't find anyone really experienced with this filesystem. You pushed several patches for it but I guess these were selected by git-fixes.

Are you familiar with the code or do you know anyone familiar with it?
From the Filesystems or Kernel/Storage teams? Adding Goldwyn and
Hannes into Cc.

The patch is simple. It seems that it has been backported into
the upstream stable kernels back to 5.10. But the patch was nominated
by the autosel bot so that it was not conscious. See
https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/?q=%22gfs2%3A+Don%27t+deref+jdesc+in+evict%22

Anyway, it seems that the patch fixed a syzbot error, see
https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/000000000000d88b1e05fdf513c3@google.com/
Comment 5 Takashi Iwai 2023-06-13 13:43:31 UTC
Sorry, I'm not familiar with this code at all.
I guess it's rather a thing for filesystem team.
Comment 6 Anthony Iliopoulos 2023-06-13 14:09:39 UTC
I already have a bunch of backports lined up for gfs2 (pending testing), so I'll take care of this one too.
