Regression in nVidia's 535 driver: Steam freezes during "Processing Vulkan shaders" and hangs complete system
Last modified: 2024-04-19 18:35:17 UTC
Tumbleweed and Leap 15.4, 15.5 (at least) recently switched nvidia driver from 525 to 535 branch. This is unfortunate because at least with Xorg, 535 most likely will hang the entire system, especially with anything vulkan - it is not a good candidate for widespread use. Please consider reverting back to 525 or perhaps have both 525 and 535 available through nvidia's repo and let the users decide. As is the repo is at least for me not usable anymore and "the hard way" is the only option since 525 is solid but not available as rpm.
Why do you assume 535 would hang the entire system with vulkan? It's the first time I hear about such a regression. Due to resources maintaining various driver versions is not an option for us. The old 525 driver won't receive security fixes either after some short time.

The old 525 driver won't receive security fixes either after some short > time. Because if the 535 driver is loaded, starting any game in Steam, that Steam first does "Processing Vulkan shaders" prior to starting, will hang at some percentage (for me 57%) and steam will freeze, as well as starting some game. At that point for example "ps" on command-line will also hang (as user or root), same for any other activity monitor. Only way to recover is booting the system. None of this happens with 525. When you say no security updates - latest 525 version was released after latest 535 version.. ? I did google the problem and discovered that I am definitely not alone with it, there seems to be lots having the same issue. 535 is as of yet a solid no go. Main pieces of my system: Intel i9 13900k, Asus GeForce RTX 3080 TUF Gaming - OC Edition (LHR) (3 displays connected), Asus TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI D4, 128Gb ram
Ok. I see. At least NVIDIA is now aware of this issue. You definitely can't rely on NVIDIA making updates for 525 forever ...
Sure, progress is progress.. Just at the moment 535 is not a possibility for me/my system as it is a serious regression. If you made a report to nvidia, I am thankful.
Any improvements with 535.86.05? Mabye this fix in that release is related? * Fixed a regression that could cause a system hang when running windowed Vulkan applications with sync-to-vblank enabled.

Its's too bad you didn't try. Or you have you lost any interest into this? Meanwhile 545.29.02 is availabe. I believe the new drivers are worth a try.
Meanwhile 545.29.06 is availabe.
Meanwhile 550.54.14 is available.
Meanwhile 550.67 is available.
Ok. Seems the reporter is no longer interested in this. So let's close this.
