When one opens a .heic image (e.g. https://github.com/dsoprea/heic-exif-samples/blob/master/image1.heic) in GIMP 2.10.34, it shows the following error message:

Opening '/home/alexander/Downloads/image1.heic' failed: Unknown file type

Installing libheif1 from packman fixed the issues with Dolphin, Gwenview and GIMP. Cf.

libheif from openSUSE only includes AVIF support. For patented HEVC codec support you need libheif1 from Packman.
