It is not possible to auto login to the GNOME session (from GDM), because the settings made are not effective.

Steps to reproduce:

Open "Users" settings panel in GNOME settings.
Unlock the settings.
Toggle the autologin.

Result: Nothing happens. You can switch between the settings and revert to the users panel to see that the toggeling has no effect.
