Description Cathy Hu 2023-09-07 09:35:30 UTC
CVE-2023-4622

A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's af_unix component can be
exploited to achieve local privilege escalation.

The unix_stream_sendpage() function tries to add data to the last skb in the
peer's recv queue without locking the queue. Thus there is a race where
unix_stream_sendpage() could access an skb locklessly that is being released by
garbage collection, resulting in use-after-free.

We recommend upgrading past commit 790c2f9d15b594350ae9bca7b236f2b1859de02c.

Comment 2 Joey Lee 2023-09-11 07:31:12 UTC
Hi Michal,

Because this issue relates to net/unix. Could you please help to handle it?

If this is not in your area, just reset but assigner to kernel-bugs@suse.de. Kernel Security Sentinel will find other expert.

Thanks a lot!
Comment 4 Michal Kubeček 2023-09-19 11:28:05 UTC
Fixing commit (790c2f9d15b5) is from stable-6.1.y, it is not a backport of
any mainline commit as the issue disappeared already in mainline as a side
effect of a sendpage() rework, reportedly somewhere in 6.5 cycle. The issue
was introduced by commit 869e7c62486e in 4.2-rc1.

We can use the stable commit as a base for backports to older branches down
to cve/linux-4.4. The tricky part will be SLE15-SP6 (and therefore also
ALP-current) where it is unclear at the moment if it is still affected and
if it is, if the stable-6.1.y fix should be adapted or rather the mainline
solution would make more sense.
Comment 5 Michal Kubeček 2023-09-19 18:32:43 UTC
The fix has been submitted to all relevant branches:

  stable 6.4.12 / 6.5
  SLE15-SP6 6.4.12
  SLE15-SP4 a6ce336aff61 (merged)
  cve/linux-5.3 bd1d94281dd1
  cve/linux-4.12 c96e3673d40f (merged)
  cve/linux-4.4 b8496bb2b03e

Reassigning back to security team.
