Description SMASH SMASH 2023-10-30 08:26:57 UTC

Comment 1 Gabriele Sonnu 2023-10-30 08:31:18 UTC
Upstream fix:

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/7644b1a1c9a7ae8ab99175989bfc8676055edb46

Tracking as affected:

 - SLE15-SP4
 - SLE15-SP5
 - SLE15-SP6
 - stable

For 15-SP4 and 15-SP5, offending code is found inside fs/io_uring.c, for 15-SP6 and stable inside io_uring/fdinfo.c.

Reassigning to a concrete person to ensure progress [1] (feel free to pass to the next one), see also the process at [2].

Hi Gabriel,

Could you help to check if your upstream patch can be backported to SUSE kernel trees? Thank you.

Comment 3 Gabriel Krisman Bertazi 2023-10-31 21:49:28 UTC
hey guys,

I'd dispute the notion this is a security vulnerability. It feels as another instance of someone submitting a silly, unexploitable bug to collect the credit for the discovery. We should start disputing these CVEs.

That said, the fix is correct. I'd eventually get to it with git-fixes.

I've queue the following patches to the corresponding for-next branches:

- 15SP6: 4166e77a73a io_uring/fdinfo: lock SQ thread while retrieving thread cpu/pid (bsc#1216693 CVE-2023-46862).

- 15SP5: 54290b68e6a io_uring/fdinfo: lock SQ thread while retrieving thread cpu/pid (bsc#1216693 CVE-2023-46862).

- 15SP4: 7e92d76bab6 io_uring/fdinfo: lock SQ thread while retrieving thread cpu/pid (bsc#1216693 CVE-2023-46862).

- 15SP3 and lower: Not applicable. The bug was introduced in 5.10 by commit dbbe9c642411c359ad0a0e32442eb2e11d3811b5 ("io_uring: show sqthread pid and cpu in fdinfo"), so anything <5.10 is not affected.

Back to the security team.

Thanks!
