Bugzilla – Bug 121755
make update wanted (slightly bad translation in 3.80)
Last modified: 2008-06-11 04:07:44 UTC
Hi, I encountered make saying (in german) make[1]: Warnung: Kein Jobserver verfügbar: setzen -j1. Fügen »+« zur Ursprungsregel hinzu. better would be make[1]: Warnung: Kein Jobserver verfügbar: setze -j1. Füge »+« zur Ursprungsregel hinzu. greets Dennis
I don't speak German very well, can you confirm this Karl?
Yes, the translation is weird and the proposal is probably okay, even if ambiguous. Does make set these parameters on its own or does it want the user to specify "-j1" and "+"? I must check the original text (I'm not a make expert). No need to fix it for 10.0.
I dont think that it wants the user to specify -j1 as cmd line and + in a rule. This happens when I run say "make -j3" on our makefiles, which allows make to run 3 jobs at once. After all jobs are done, it emits the said message. I think it means that it is now running with -j1 and + to the original rule, thus saying what its doing not what the user should do. This is the english message: warning: jobserver unavailable: using -j1. Add `+' to parent make rule. so it says its using -j1 but the add message is a bit odd. I must admit that although I know make that I don't really know what it means with the + there, but Im quite sure that it wants to tell us that it implicitly adds + to some make rule.
Thanks for the info thus far.
I updated the upstream translation (TP) and will pull it from there next time for 10.1.
That was some time ago, Karl. ;-) Did you do this, and we can mark this as resolved fixed?
probably, I must check whether we pulled in the recent make update.
Hi, for SuSE 10.1 make 3.80-201 (Build Date: Sa 29 Apr 2006 02:39:41 CEST) make still contains the broken/strange translation.
3.81 with the slightly improved translation got released on 2006-04-01--probably too late for SLE 10. Matthias, please update make for 10.2.
1) This is definitvely too late for SLE10. Text freeze was long ago, and this is only a very minor bug. 2) make 3.81 has already been submitted to BETA, but due to a number of packages that will fail to build (several backwards incompatibilities) I do not know yet whether we want 3.81 for SL10.2. Closing as LATER. If you think this is important for 10.2 even if make wouldn't be updated, tell me and I'll patch 3.80.
3.81 is now part of 10.2
