Description jonah naylor 2005-10-09 21:52:10 UTC
it worked fine in 9.3 as soon as plugged in, but nothing comes up in 10.0 and
i can't use my usb drive which is really bad as i have lots of important stuff
i need on there. thus it's critical for me, if i can't get help or a fix for
this i've lost a lot of important things i backed up.
Comment 1 Martin Lasarsch 2005-10-10 10:17:53 UTC
please provide more information:

plug the drive in and:

hwinfo --disk
fdisk -l

yes that was ok, but please attach (create attachment link) next time the
files to the bug, its easier to read, thanks.

So please attach these files, as root do:

cp /var/log/boot.msg /tmp/

tail -n200 /var/log/messages > /tmp/messages

attach /tmp/messages and /tmp/boot.msg

you can delete the 2 files in /tmp after attaching.

module loaded, so hotplug works so far. This look like a kernel bug for me. Some
scsi problem that i don't understand.

Jonah, which version of 10.0 is it. Final version?
Comment 9 jonah naylor 2005-10-13 17:12:50 UTC
yeah it's the opensuse.org 10.0 final eval version

the 32bit eval final version that's on all the servers now. i've read people
are also having problems such as with ipods and other usb drive devices not
responding

i've re-attaced this because i'm not entirely sure i did it right the first time with the drive turned on first etc.

is any progress being made to fix this problem, i still can't use my hardrive. i've reattached to make sure you got the right file as i'm not sure if i attached the drive last time i submitted this.

so it works ok for you? sda is detected after all.
you may want to check dmesg for timeout erros:

Are you able to compile your own debug kernels to find the change between 2.6.11 and 2.6.13 that breaks your device?
Comment 18 jonah naylor 2005-11-22 09:58:26 UTC
i'm really sorry to say that i'm a beginner and don't really know how to do much with linux yet.
Comment 19 Olaf Hering 2005-11-22 20:22:21 UTC
I will build you a few testkernels tomorrow. One plain 2.6.11 to verify that it still works, and a 2.6.13 to verify that it is indeed broken. Then we will have to check many versions inbetween. I hope you have a good internet connection.
Comment 20 jonah naylor 2005-11-22 22:56:26 UTC
thank you. my internet connection is quite good so it should be fine. thanks again i appreciate the help.
Comment 21 Olaf Hering 2005-11-23 14:29:57 UTC
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/olh/kernel/bug121899/

there are now 2 bzImage boot files, one for 2.6.11 and one for 2.6.13

copy them to /boot/ and add 2 new entries to /boot/grub/menu.lst:

title usbtest 2.6.11
 kernel (hd0,1)/bzImage-2.6.11.12 panic=30 root=/dev/hda2 init=/bin/bash --login

you man need to change the (hd0,1) part to look like the other entries there, look for the /vmlinuz entry. If in doubt, attach your menu.lst file.

After a reboot, a new entry will appear in the grub menu. Select it and after a while you will get a shell. Run 'dmesg | grep -- -71' again. The 2.6.11 kernel will hopefully show no errors.
Then run /sbin/reboot to boot back into the "normal" kernel.
Comment 22 jonah naylor 2005-11-23 17:23:12 UTC
hi i'll let you check menu.lst file and advise what entries to make here just incase i mess anything up thanks.

Comment 24 jonah naylor 2005-11-23 19:08:56 UTC
ok i gave it a go and both these other two kernels booted ok and the grub entry works ok.

my problem now is how to check the drive. i tried to type dmesg | -- -71 but i don't know how to get the | character. i got one similar but with a slight gap in the middle. my keyboard has the | character marked on and this works from kde but the closest i can get is pressing shift hash key which is normally a ~ character but gives me the line with slight gap from command prompt.

the drive doesn't tick over though when plugged in from either of these kernels so prob means there's no problems.
Comment 25 Olaf Hering 2005-11-23 19:15:16 UTC
dont you have an us keyboard? The default keymap in the kernel is an US keyboard layout. But you can load your own keymap via loadkeys. Do a
grep KEYTABLE /etc/sysconfig/keyboard

In my case, it would be 'loadkeys mac-us.map.gz'
Comment 26 jonah naylor 2005-11-23 19:49:53 UTC
well i have a uk keyboard, any ideas what i do for that. sorry to be so demanding i appreciate your help and realise i'm useless!!
Comment 27 Olaf Hering 2005-11-23 20:10:33 UTC
try 'loadkeys uk'
Comment 28 jonah naylor 2005-11-23 21:16:19 UTC
hey what d'ya know! load keys uk worked like a charm

however the command didn't seem to do anything. i mean no errors were shown or anything but on pressing return i just got another command prompt

is this right. i tried unplugging the drive and then plugging it back in again on the command prompt and it was detected fine and didn't tick over like it does when it's not working.

also something interesting. the device seems to be detected twice. there are two entries of the usb storage device. all the blurb that appears when you plug it in comes up and the same text repeated again.
Comment 29 Olaf Hering 2005-11-23 21:19:41 UTC
ok, and this happens even with 2.6.13?

If yes, then I will build a kernel from the original 10.0 sources. If that still works, then some of the config options need review.
Comment 30 jonah naylor 2005-11-23 23:53:52 UTC
yeah seems to just be the same in 2.6.13 too, like i say the drive makes this annoying clicking sound when it's not working, but runs silenty in suse 9.3 and windows xp
Comment 31 Olaf Hering 2005-11-24 12:21:30 UTC
there is now a bzImage-2.6.13-15, can you check if that one works as well?
Comment 32 jonah naylor 2005-11-26 21:46:25 UTC
yeah that one works fine also. just like the other two i tried.
Comment 33 Olaf Hering 2005-12-07 10:39:33 UTC
I was busy with other stuff the last days.
There is now a new 'bzImage' file, with more options enabled.
Also, can you try if the default kernel works any better with the 'apic' boot option?
Comment 34 jonah naylor 2005-12-10 23:35:22 UTC
what' the apic boot option then?
Comment 35 Olaf Hering 2005-12-11 11:16:58 UTC
you mean where to specify the additional 'apic' option?
During boot there is a menu for 'Linux, Safe settings, Floppy'. Perhaps also Windows. At the bottom, there is a text entry area. I heard its not obvious to recognize anymore in 10.0. Just type ' apic ' there and it will be passed to the kernel.
Comment 36 jonah naylor 2005-12-12 17:01:19 UTC
the apic thing doesn't seem to work or do anything. i'm not sure it even knew i entered it in as no text shows up anymore when you type a command on the boot menu of suse 10.0, i know it used to in 9.3 like you say as i had to once type the sax command

as for the new bzimage, that seems again to work fine. the drive doesn't tick over - as it does when it won't work. it constantly ticks as soon as the hardware icon on the boot splash screen lights up.
Comment 37 jonah naylor 2005-12-13 19:25:05 UTC
i figured out that if you press f2 on the boot screen for other options it opens the text box up and i put apic in there. but it didn't seem to do anything, booted as normal and drive still doesn't work.
Comment 38 Olaf Hering 2005-12-13 19:27:35 UTC
ok, I will look through the .config differences between the working and non-working kernel and provide more binaries tomorrow.
Comment 39 Olaf Hering 2005-12-19 08:01:21 UTC
I have uploaded a kernel-default.rpm which has the drivers compiled in. Can you check if that makes any difference?
Comment 40 jonah naylor 2005-12-19 22:49:12 UTC
i tried to install this with yast but it says:

I have uploaded also kernel-default-nongpl-2.6.13-15.7_bug121899_200512181932.i586.rpm

Comment 42 jonah naylor 2005-12-22 13:27:42 UTC
hi i successfully installed the rpms you put up, thanks for that. unfortunatley the drive still isn't working. it's made no difference.
Comment 43 jonah naylor 2006-02-20 20:26:00 UTC
hi it's been so long, i wondered if i'd been forgotten or if there were any news ideas on this problem. i still can't access my portable drive...
Comment 44 jonah naylor 2006-03-13 20:18:58 UTC
hi i still can't get the drive to work but i found this bug on here: bug #135362

is this related and what is this patch and how does it work? please respond

thanks.
Comment 45 Olaf Hering 2006-03-13 20:39:29 UTC
sorry, this bug scrolled off.
I have currently no idea how to track this down further other than going from the minimal config that worked to the full featured config that does not work.
You can try the current kernel 2.6.16-rc6.

Install the rpm from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/i386/HEAD/kernel-default.i586.rpm
Maybe you will get an unresolved dependency for kernel-default-nongpl. You have to ignore it, or just remove the kernel-default-nongpl package, you probably dont need it.
Comment 46 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2006-03-13 21:14:37 UTC
Does this device still not work for 10.1 beta7?
Comment 47 jonah naylor 2006-03-23 16:01:31 UTC
i daren't try 10.1 betas just because other than the drive the system is all working well and i don't want to break anything
Comment 48 jonah naylor 2006-03-23 16:04:43 UTC
i get a perl-bootloader dependancy prob plus the kernel-default-nongpl etc. i don't want my system to not boot up properly so i didn't risk it
Comment 49 Olaf Hering 2006-03-23 16:52:55 UTC
just ignore that bootloader part.
open a terminal window
become root with 'su -'
rpm -e kernel-default-nongpl
rpm -Uvh --nodeps new-kernel.rpm

there is no need to install 10.1, as the bug is in the kernel.
Comment 50 jonah naylor 2006-03-23 18:53:16 UTC
ah, now here's a development

i downloaded from the link above and installed the kernel how you said, rebooted and thought wow!

i thought it was working as the drive name came up in my computer, i hoorayed with joy but then an error message.

i right clicked the drive and clicked mount

it said:
mount: can't find /dev/sda1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
Please check that the device is plugged correctly.

however the drive was running silenty, not clicking/ticking over as it used to when not working.

i then tried the internet to report this here but my wireless card wouldn't work, so i had to downgrade the kernel back down off the suse dvd, reboot and then the drive was ticking again.

so i'm reporting this back wiht my old kernel as new one messed up internet connection.

close, but didn't work - and a pain with having to downgrade again.
Comment 51 Olaf Hering 2006-03-23 19:04:13 UTC
ok, the missing subfs prevents the mounting. I'm not sure how to fixup the wireless, you will need some extra wlan-KMP rpms now in 10.1.
Can you try it once again with the new kernel and mount the device manually?

in a terminal, type:
su -
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
dmesg > /tmp/dmesg-2.6.16.txt
umount /mnt
 then attach /tmp/dmesg-2.6.16.txt

dmesg text file for new kernel

hi here is the attachment
Comment 53 Olaf Hering 2006-03-23 19:46:53 UTC
ok, no obvious errors.
what wlan modules do you need? Can you attach the 'hwinfo' output from the 10.0 kernel? I think we can fix your setup for a 10.1 kernel on a 10.0 system.

hardware info output

hi here is my current 10.0 hwinfo.txt with usb hardrive unattached. actually i've got no printers or anything attached, will this matter?
Comment 55 jonah naylor 2006-03-28 16:16:53 UTC
oh and the other thing is how do we get the drive working once i get 10.1 kernel installed and working? as it didn't seem to work with the KOTD i tried out
Comment 56 Olaf Hering 2006-04-09 10:12:10 UTC
I dont see any driver replacement for the rt2500.ko driver in 10.0.
It had modalias 'pci:v00001814d00000201sv*sd*bc*sc*i*', but no such thing exists in 10.1.
bug #149141 has the details.
Comment 57 jonah naylor 2006-05-12 17:47:57 UTC
i've now updated to suse 10.1 and the usb hard drive now works perfectly which is great news. so i guess though i'm fixed the bug for 10.0 isn't but just to let you know 10.1 is ok.

as suspected though my sweex conexant wlan pcmcia card doesn't work - yast doesn't detect it even under network cards
Comment 58 Olaf Hering 2006-05-15 09:23:42 UTC
yes, there is no driver for it, rt2500 is appearently too unstable.
thanks for your patience.
