Description Richard Fan 2024-01-31 03:36:28 UTC
## Observation

openQA test in scenario sle-15-SP6-Online-ppc64le-toolchain_zypper@ppc64le fails in
[kdump_and_crash](http://openqa.suse.de/tests/13390840/modules/kdump_and_crash/steps/85)

## Test suite description
Maintainer: QE Core, mnowak

Install toolchain packages and test the toolchain. Uses a more powerful machine configuration.

## Reproducible

Fails since (at least) Build [47.2](http://openqa.suse.de/tests/13318576)

## Expected result

Last good: (unknown) (or more recent)

## Further details

Always latest result in this scenario: [latest](http://openqa.suse.de/tests/latest?arch=ppc64le&distri=sle&flavor=Online&machine=ppc64le&test=toolchain_zypper&version=15-SP6)

From https://openqa.suse.de/tests/13390840/logfile?filename=serial0.txt we see that
during normal boot, three partitions are detected when virtio-blk discovers the disk:
	[ 3.906412][ T336] virtio_blk virtio4: 4/0/0 default/read/poll queues
	[ 3.909267][ T336] virtio_blk virtio4: [vda] 62914560 512-byte logical blocks (32.2 GB/30.0 GiB)
	[ 3.925002][ T336] vda: vda1 vda2 vda3

however, in the kdump boot, no partitions are found after this:
	[ 12.033285][ T285] virtio_blk virtio4: 4/0/0 default/read/poll queues
	[ 12.084139][ T285] virtio_blk virtio4: [vda] 62914560 512-byte logical blocks (32.2 GB/30.0 GiB)

We might be seeing the problem that this patch series attempts to solve:
https://lore.kernel.org/all/20230808104239.146085-1-ming.lei@redhat.com/
In short, virtio-blk fails when maxcpus is set to 1.

The first step to verify this is to try kdump with unlimited CPUs, i.e. setting KDUMP_CPUS to 0 in /etc/sysconfig/kdump

I'll see if I can reproduce this in a VM with KDUMP_CPUS unset and fix it with KDUMP_CPUS=0.

Similar problem, except with LPFC insteda of virtio-blk is handled in bsc#1218180

Hello David,

Could you please update the status of this bug.
Comment 7 David Mair 2024-02-12 20:39:13 UTC
Jiri, is this one you can takeover?

Re-reading your comments, I take it this is essentially INVALID as a kdump bug and is a virtio-blk bug where the reporter of this could either join in or they could create another bug reporting it as a virtio-blk.
Comment 9 Héctor Orón Martínez 2024-02-13 16:56:53 UTC
Could you reduce the issue to a reproducible simple invocation of qemu or libvirt?

hmm really? If it affects LPFC as well as virtio-blk should it rather be looked at from the kdump side?

Or are we thinking about a bug in virtio-blk guest kernel driver or virtio-blk qemu backend? Because if this affects LPFC that seems unlikely.

Comment #4 supports your point. However, the Assignee will need to change, probably t Jiri.
Comment 12 Jiri Bohac 2024-02-16 16:36:48 UTC
I'll take this; as I said in Comment #4, I believe this is likely a duplicate of bsc#1218180.
A fix for nr_cpus on PPC is now merged in the SP6 kernel (5e24f676)
An updated version of kdump that makes use of nr_cpus instead of maxcpus is now submitted to SP6 (kdump-2.0.1+git1.gdf8e77c, https://build.suse.de/request/show/321872).
Please re-test when the kernel and kdump containing these fixes are available.

Then let's put it as a duplicate
