Bugzilla – Bug 1220251
VUL-0: CVE-2023-52447: kernel-source,kernel-source-azure,kernel-source-rt: bpf: Defer the free of inner map when necessary
Last modified: 2024-06-25 18:11:20 UTC
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: Defer the free of inner map when necessary When updating or deleting an inner map in map array or map htab, the map may still be accessed by non-sleepable program or sleepable program. However bpf_map_fd_put_ptr() decreases the ref-counter of the inner map directly through bpf_map_put(), if the ref-counter is the last one (which is true for most cases), the inner map will be freed by ops->map_free() in a kworker. But for now, most .map_free() callbacks don't use synchronize_rcu() or its variants to wait for the elapse of a RCU grace period, so after the invocation of ops->map_free completes, the bpf program which is accessing the inner map may incur use-after-free problem. Fix the free of inner map by invoking bpf_map_free_deferred() after both one RCU grace period and one tasks trace RCU grace period if the inner map has been removed from the outer map before. The deferment is accomplished by using call_rcu() or call_rcu_tasks_trace() when releasing the last ref-counter of bpf map. The newly-added rcu_head field in bpf_map shares the same storage space with work field to reduce the size of bpf_map. Affected: - SLE15-SP6 - cve/linux-5.14 stable already has the fix.
Fix has been merged into SLE15-SP6 (5323b3a3408d). With the whole "bpf: Fix the release of inner map" series[1] pulled, of with patch 2-4 are the actual fix: 1. 169410eba271 "bpf: Check rcu_read_lock_trace_held() before calling bpf map helpers" 2. 20c20bd11a07 "bpf: Add map and need_defer parameters to .map_fd_put_ptr()" 3. 79d93b3c6ffd "bpf: Set need_defer as false when clearing fd array during map free" 4. 876673364161 "bpf: Defer the free of inner map when necessary" 5. af66bfd3c853 "bpf: Optimize the free of inner map" 6. 1624918be84a "selftests/bpf: Add test cases for inner map" 7. e3dd40828534 "selftests/bpf: Test outer map update operations in syscall program" For SLE15-SP5 PR is ready to merge in users/syu/SLE15-SP5/for-next (223602fe6e49). It had to additionally include commit e6c86c513f44 "rcu-tasks: Provide rcu_trace_implies_rcu_gp()" (which basically is a function that just returns true), also commit af66bfd3c853 "bpf: Optimize the free of inner map" is dropped since it does not directly fix the vulnerability. To workaround kABI breakage of map_fd_put_ptr() in struct bpf_map_ops I introduced a new method called map_fd_put_ptr_new() that uses the new signature, an revert the signature change in map_fd_put_ptr(); then adapt the code base to use map_fd_put_ptr_new(). As for cve/linux-5.14, the impact rather minimal since it does not have commit c8644cd0efe7 ("bpf: refine kernel.unprivileged_bpf_disabled behaviour", since v5.19), unlike SLE15-SP5 and SLE15-SP6. Without that commit it is impossible for unprivileged user to exploit this vulnerability. But since The needed fix is a quite similar to the SLE15-SP5 one it isn't too much work to adapt the work to cve/linux-5.14 as well. PR is ready to merge in users/syu/cve/linux-5.14/for-next (03b0fe3ab7a5). Reassigning back to security team. 1: https://lore.kernel.org/all/20231204140425.1480317-1-houtao@huaweicloud.com/
More notes on the impact of the vulnerability: Exploiting as unprivileged is theoretically possible. With commit c8644cd0efe7 ("bpf: refine kernel.unprivileged_bpf_disabled behaviour", included in SLE15-SP5 and SLE15-SP6) unprivileged user can now do BPF operations if they get a hold of a file descriptor to existing BPF object (either passes by a privileged process or through bpffs that had default file permission modified); even with CONFIG_BPF_UNPRIV_DEFAULT_OFF=y. So it is possible for this CVE to be exploited by an unprivileged user if they could get hold of file descriptor to a BPF map of type BPF_MAP_TYPE_HASH_OF_MAPS or BPF_MAP_TYPE_ARRAY_OF_MAPS, and issue the BPF_MAP_DELETE_ELEM command to bpf() syscall. The fortunate thing is that with CONFIG_BPF_UNPRIV_DEFAULT_OFF=y unprivileged user cannot create BPF map themselves, thus making the hardest part of expliting this CVE lie in getting a hold of such file descriptor. While BPF_MAP_TYPE_HASH_OF_MAPS and BPF_MAP_TYPE_ARRAY_OF_MAPS are quite commonly used, AFAIK nothing we package in SLES/openSUSE create such BPF map and either passes it to another process or expose it in bpffs. So overall, the impact should still be relatively low.
