Don't know if MATE 1.28.2 or new Kernel is reason. MATE was in April 10 DUP Slowroll MATE 1.26.2 works fine. All panel add-on abort unexpectedly and will not reload. Only Software Update and Classic Menu are in Panel. Went back to 4/6/24 backup and locked MATE mozo caja and other parts of patterns-mate-mate. MATE does not work right but panel appears - suspect libc fix breaks MATE. Putting back broken April 13 image with broken panel. This makes Tumbleweed unusable to me as I cannot select programs or workspaces to do development with. I made this a critical problem - the other only says clock and is normal problem - this is many other parts of panel. Bugzilla – Bug 1222749

Yep. Adding my name to this bug, looks like identical to Larry's description of the panel applets . . . . TW with MATE DE running on '12 Mac Pro, after zypper dup this morning approx 246 package upgrades. Does seem to render the DE "not usable" for basic function . . . reviving from suspend does not show e.g., "firefox" in the panel, so I can't get back to browser tabs that were open . . . that is "critical" to using the DE.
Hello everyone, maybe it will help if version 1.28.1 of mate-panel is rolled out. I have the same problem. See here at Github: https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-panel/issues/1433 We couldn’t solve the problem for Tumbleweed yet, but in the thread it is also said that the problem was fixed with the version of mate-panel 1.28.1. Currently version 1.28.0 is in the package sources. Greetings snydar
Hello, just a moment ago I tried a fresh installation from openSUSE-Tumbleweed-DVD-x86_64-Snapshot20240417-Media.iso on hardware as well as a 'zypper dupped' virtuelbox testsystem installed freshly two weeks ago: the MATE panel is still broken out of the box. While "Advanced MATE menu" and "Sticky Notes" plugins are working, "Show Desktop", "Clock", "Window List", "Notification Area", and "Workspace Switcher" are quitting unexpectedly, each with its own error window, when logging in to MATE Desktop. Pushing the "Reload" button just produces a new error windows. Additional error window displayed: "The panel encountered a problem while loading "GvcAppletFactory::GvcApplet.". Regards Michael

I mean good to have an update, not "good that it isn't fixed." : - ))
Dropping by to mention that in my Manjaro MATE install in an '09 MacBookPro the MATE panel is working properly? No missing applets. I think I'm more or less up to date, the system update applet is showing Firefox and T-Bird to upgrade . . .

Took a minute to find that their mate-panel version is 1.26.4-1 ... so an older version??
No issues with 1.26.x - the issues are with 1.28.x of MATE. My Ubuntu, Mint, Manjaro, and Leap are all 1.26.x - they have no panel issues. Apparently Fedora 40 also has the 1.28.x panel issue with no fix at this time.
Hello everyone, I have installed Fedora 40 in VBOX: Fedora: mate-desktop 1.28.1 mate-panel 1.28.0 The panel works ------- Tumbleweed: mate-desktop 1.28.2 mate-panel 1.28.0 Panel crashes Best regards snydar
I found the cure you have to have dconf-editor installed an reboot and the panels will not abort. I compared the latest fedora 40 beta with the 20 day old one that did not work and installed dconf-editor and fedora 40 worked Did the same to my Tumbleweed and panels now work. @LarryR: Thanks for posting that data . . . when I get back to TW I'll check that out . . . .
Yes! It works! Thank you. =)
Also worked for me . . . "LLR3:~ # zypper in dconf-editor" seems to restore the applets . . . on reboot I got another "error" notification about "appletfactoryxxxx" "don't delete" or "delete" . . . . I selected "don't delete"??? mate-panel seems to be functioning . . . .
You mean "GvcAppletFactory". I also had this message. Here is the solution: https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-media/issues/214
