Bugzilla – Bug 1226795
Remove VLC and Codecs from base system
Last modified: 2024-06-26 20:46:14 UTC
VLC and video Codecs are against the design of Kalpa and can easily be installed from Flathub. This way, they should be removed from base system.
VLC is required by the phonon library (used by media playback in Qt apps). The maintainers of the VLC package refused to split it in a more sensible way. [I don't like it either] *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 1219416 ***

Could you provide some use case that confirms what you said? I don't agree that this case is a duplicate of bug 1219416. Checking that I guess that the reporter probably break his system playing with the packages, also Dragon Player seems to not be installing any codec as dependency. Anyway, this bug is about Kalpa which has a different approach.
VLC is required for the Phonon backend, and will not be removed from the patterns.
