[Fate 120340] Keep downloading while installing packages from ftp/http with YaST
Last modified: 2008-11-13 12:12:23 UTC
Is it possible to let YaST download the next package while installing the one downloaded before. This could speed up installation on almost all connection types.
I can remember some discussion around this before. One proposal was to do 2 downloads simultaneously. Let's ask Jiri here.
No, we suggested to download a package while previous one is being installed (the reason was the limitation of servers for non-privileged users, see bug 119813). Michael, passing to you...
I suggest running the downloads non stop one after the other, and in parallel install whatever is already downloaded. Installations of some packages take longer and might give time to download several packages within this period. This paired with bug 148480 (multiple installation mirrors) and downloading in parallel (albeit one package at a time per mirror) should speed up remote installations considerabely.
I see that bug 148480 is about multiple installation sources, which is different than multiple installation mirrors. Thus I would suggest to include it as part of this bug. Similar behaviour is performed by the Smart Package Manager, and I must say it has speeded up my upgrades enormously. It would be nice to be able to do similary within YaST.
