Bugzilla – Bug 130186
CD drive not found
Last modified: 2005-11-17 20:28:55 UTC
With Suse 10.0, I had the following problem: my cd drive (a standard CDRW drive) was not detected very well: it showed up some times during startup, but then /dev/hdg did not exists. However, when I opened Yast and its CD-ROM configuration component, it was found twice, /dev/hdg started to exist (just by opening the component, the drive seemed to be initialized), and everything worked just fine until the next reboot. Now with 10.1 Alpha 2, the only difference is that the Yast component does no longer find the drive: It just tells me that no cd/dvd device was found. /proc/ide/ide3 for hdg exists (with /proc/ide/ide3/hdg/model containing "LITE-ON LTR-48125W" and /proc/ide/ide3/hdg/driver containing "ide-default version 0.9.newide") dmesg tells me (where especially "ide3: BM-DMA at 0xfc08-0xfc0f, BIOS settings: hdg:DMA, hdh:pio" and "hdg: LITE-ON LTR-48125W, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive" tell me that the drive is somehow found): Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 7.00alpha2 ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx SCSI subsystem initialized PDC20276: IDE controller at PCI slot 0000:00:0f.0 ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKD] enabled at IRQ 10 PCI: setting IRQ 10 as level-triggered ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:0f.0[A] -> Link [LNKD] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10 input: ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse on isa0060/serio1 PDC20276: chipset revision 1 PDC20276: 100% native mode on irq 10 ide0: BM-DMA at 0xdc00-0xdc07, BIOS settings: hda:pio, hdb:pio ide1: BM-DMA at 0xdc08-0xdc0f, BIOS settings: hdc:pio, hdd:pio Probing IDE interface ide0... hda: HDS722516VLAT80, ATA DISK drive ide0 at 0xec00-0xec07,0xe802 on irq 10 hda: max request size: 1024KiB hda: 321672960 sectors (164696 MB) w/7938KiB Cache, CHS=20023/255/63, UDMA(100) hda: cache flushes supported hda: hda1 hda2 < hda5 hda6 > Probing IDE interface ide1... hdc: HDS722525VLAT80, ATA DISK drive ide1 at 0xe400-0xe407,0xe002 on irq 10 hdc: max request size: 1024KiB hdc: 488397168 sectors (250059 MB) w/7938KiB Cache, CHS=30401/255/63, UDMA(100) hdc: cache flushes supported hdc: hdc1 VP_IDE: IDE controller at PCI slot 0000:00:11.1 ACPI-0212: *** Warning: Device is not power manageable ACPI-0402: *** Warning: Unable to derive IRQ for device 0000:00:11.1 ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:11.1[A]: no GSI PCI: Via IRQ fixup for 0000:00:11.1, from 255 to 15 VP_IDE: chipset revision 6 VP_IDE: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later VP_IDE: VIA vt8233a (rev 00) IDE UDMA133 controller on pci0000:00:11.1 ide2: BM-DMA at 0xfc00-0xfc07, BIOS settings: hde:DMA, hdf:pio ide3: BM-DMA at 0xfc08-0xfc0f, BIOS settings: hdg:DMA, hdh:pio Probing IDE interface ide2... hde: ST380021A, ATA DISK drive ide2 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14 hde: max request size: 128KiB hde: 156301488 sectors (80026 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=65535/16/63, UDMA(100) hde: cache flushes not supported hde: hde1 hde2 < hde5 hde6 hde7 hde8 > Probing IDE interface ide3... hdg: LITE-ON LTR-48125W, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive ide3 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
Please attach the output of `hwinfo --ide'.
hwinfo --ide gives the following output (and /dev/hdg exists after that; I am not sure if this was caused by running this command; I could check that later) 16: IDE 00.0: 10600 Disk [Created at block.188] UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_serial_VN643ECDD516WD Unique ID: Fffu.qLc2Uco_JMD Parent ID: _+Pw.jgy9NAAThjB SysFS ID: /block/hda SysFS BusID: 0.0 SysFS Device Link: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0f.0/ide0/0.0 Hardware Class: disk Model: "HDS722516VLAT80" Device: "HDS722516VLAT80" Revision: "V34OA6EA" Serial ID: "VN643ECDD516WD" Driver: "Promise_IDE", "ide-disk", "ide-disk" Device File: /dev/hda Device Files: /dev/hda, /dev/disk/by-id/ata-HDS722516VLAT80_VN643ECDD516WD, /dev/disk/by-path/pci-0000:00:0f.0-ide-0:0 Device Number: block 3:0-3:63 Geometry (Logical): CHS 20023/255/63 Size: 321672960 sectors a 512 bytes Config Status: cfg=yes, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #6 (RAID bus controller) 17: IDE 02.0: 10600 Disk [Created at block.188] UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_serial_VN69TECKC2ET8A Unique ID: 90A1.j4nFmnWkuYF Parent ID: _+Pw.jgy9NAAThjB SysFS ID: /block/hdc SysFS BusID: 1.0 SysFS Device Link: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0f.0/ide1/1.0 Hardware Class: disk Model: "HDS722525VLAT80" Device: "HDS722525VLAT80" Revision: "V36OA6MA" Serial ID: "VN69TECKC2ET8A" Driver: "Promise_IDE", "ide-disk", "ide-disk" Device File: /dev/hdc Device Files: /dev/hdc, /dev/disk/by-id/ata-HDS722525VLAT80_VN69TECKC2ET8A, /dev/disk/by-path/pci-0000:00:0f.0-ide-1:0 Device Number: block 22:0-22:63 Geometry (Logical): CHS 30401/255/63 Size: 488397168 sectors a 512 bytes Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #6 (RAID bus controller) 18: IDE 04.0: 10600 Disk [Created at block.188] UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_serial_3HV25EWP Unique ID: 3Ng9.X44ALPeDkJ3 Parent ID: +Y+h.mcsZ0a690T4 SysFS ID: /block/hde SysFS BusID: 2.0 SysFS Device Link: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.1/ide2/2.0 Hardware Class: disk Model: "ST380021A" Device: "ST380021A" Revision: "3.19" Serial ID: "3HV25EWP" Driver: "VIA_IDE", "ide-disk", "ide-disk" Device File: /dev/hde Device Files: /dev/hde, /dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST380021A_3HV25EWP, /dev/disk/by-path/pci-0000:00:11.1-ide-0:0 Device Number: block 33:0-33:63 Geometry (Logical): CHS 155061/16/63 Size: 156301488 sectors a 512 bytes Config Status: cfg=yes, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #8 (IDE interface) 19: IDE 06.0: 10602 CD-ROM (CD-RW) [Created at block.192] Unique ID: _jAI.DRKEoRFhcl7 Parent ID: +Y+h.mcsZ0a690T4 SysFS ID: /block/hdg SysFS BusID: 3.0 SysFS Device Link: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.1/ide3/3.0 Hardware Class: cdrom Model: "LITE-ON LTR-48125W" Vendor: "LITE-ON" Device: "LTR-48125W" Revision: "VS0B" Serial ID: "" Driver: "VIA_IDE", "ide-cdrom", "ide-cdrom" Device File: /dev/hdg Device Files: /dev/hdg, /dev/cdrecorder2, /dev/disk/by-path/pci-0000:00:11.1-ide-1:0 Device Number: block 34:0 Features: CD-R, CD-RW Size: 0 sectors a 512 bytes Config Status: cfg=yes, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #8 (IDE interface) Drive Speed: 205
Before running hwinfo --ide, /dev/hdg does not exist. After that, it exists.
Please don't change the status from NEED to ASSI with BNC-Screening-Bugs because we're NOT the (final) assignees here. Thanks. This looks like a problem in the IDE-subsystem of the kernel. Please attach 500 lines of your syslog (uncompressed).
This could also be a problem with the drive itself (buggy firmware or a defect). You might help us by trying out this drive in another machine (with another system) or booting a life-system (like knoppix). If it works flawless there, it is more likely a bug wihtin our system. If it makes problems there either, it's more likely on your side. You noticed that the drive appears after probing the bus with hwinfo which would indicate that this is a firmware bug. The drive might not identify itself properly at boot-time so that it cannot be found. If you have a another OS installed, you could try it there. There could be another cause for this problem: Your IDE-Controller which obviously supports 4 IDE-channels. Maby within the BIOS of your system (or this controller) there is an option that might fix this -- Channels 3 and 4 might run in another mode which prevents them from reporting attached drives e.g. Please have a look there either. If nothing works and the required information was given, I will redirect this bug.
I checked the box "This comment provides the needed information. Change the status of this bug back to ASSIGNED." previously -- should I leave the status as NEEDINFO instead? There is a RAID controller integrated into my board, which does not run in RAID mode but in "normal" IDE mode. The first harddisk and the CD drive are attached to the "usual" onboard controller, and the second and third harddisks are attached to the RAID controller. However, I set the RAID controller as the boot device in my BIOS, so I boot from the second harddisk. This seems to cause the "usual" onbord IDE controller to end up as hde to hdh. With Knoppix 3.4 (c't edition) and its Kernel 2.6, the CD drive seems to work without problems. The Yast CD configuration module does not start at all at the moment. Maybe this has todo with the installation of yast2-hardware-detection, which was not installed by default earlier. tail -n 500 /var/log/messages Oct 25 10:59:01 linux /usr/sbin/cron[6430]: (root) CMD ( rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.hourly) Oct 25 10:59:24 linux kdm: :0[5733]: pam_unix2: session finished for user uli, service xdm-np Oct 25 10:59:25 linux init: Switching to runlevel: 0 Oct 25 10:59:26 linux gconfd (uli-6067): Signal 15 erhalten, ordungsgemäßes Herunterfahren Oct 25 10:59:26 linux gconfd (uli-6067): Beenden Oct 25 10:59:31 linux kernel: bootsplash: status on console 0 changed to on Oct 25 10:59:33 linux last message repeated 2 times Oct 25 10:59:34 linux sshd[4343]: Received signal 15; terminating.
