Description Thorsten Staerk 2005-10-29 07:31:26 UTC
On my miro flatscreen, the display is always too far on the right. When I tell yast2 to move it more to the left, save, and restart the X system, just nothing changes. Before my update to SUSE 10, I used to be able to change the display position by:

yast2 -> hardware -> Graphic Card and Monitor -> Change -> Desktop -> Monitor -> Change Configuration -> Properties -> LCD -> 1280x1024 @ 70 Hz -> Expert -> XServerPool -> saving -> restarting X with CTRL_ALT_Backspace

Without the setting "XServerPool", it did not work. Now, after the update, this setting is gone. Why doesn't yast2 react on the changes I do for the display position ?
Comment 1 Marcus Schaefer 2005-11-07 09:50:37 UTC
I would suggest to call

 sax2 -> change monitor to "LCD -> 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz"

and give it a test. almost all flatscreens requires 60Hz to put
the picture in the middle automatically

Regards
Marcus

no further information
Comment 3 Thorsten Staerk 2005-11-17 09:06:50 UTC
what does "no further information" mean ? You fixed it and give no further information, because it just works ?
For my part, I am waiting to come home from work and will try your suggestion maybe this weekend.

Does resolution "remind" mean you inform me when SUSE 11 is out with my bug fixed ? And how can you fix it without my information ? I am sorry not to understand, but all your information is "no further information".
Comment 4 Marcus Schaefer 2005-11-18 13:37:17 UTC
no further information means that you did not provide the information
I asked for since November 7th. See comment #1
Comment 5 Thorsten Staerk 2005-11-18 17:45:33 UTC
same as before - can change position, but does not save.
Comment 6 Marcus Schaefer 2005-11-21 11:42:47 UTC
I'm sorry but this information doesn't help. If you don't mind
follow the workflow I give you now:

1) run sax from runlevel 3 as root with the following option:

     sax2 -r

2) now setup your system as you did before,
change configuration -> resolution, colors, etc...

3) now test the configuration and adapt the picture on the screen
   according to your needs.

4) save the configuration but do NOT exit sax

5) switch to a textconsole

     Ctrl-Alt-F1

6) login and save the contents of the directory:

     /var/cache/xfine/

7) switch back to the SaX X-Server with Ctrl-Alt-F7 and save
   the configuration WITHOUT testing.

8) provide the newly written configuration file:

     /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Thanks

with sax2 started from runlevel 3, the display is too far on the LEFT. I now adjusted it to the middle of the screen, and could save, but now, the monitor's message "doing auto sync" appears again in the middle of the monitor. That was what I wanted to get rid of in the first place.

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately you forgot to provide the
newly written config file as asked for in step 8) of my last comment.
Could you provide that file as well ? Thanks

I also don't understand what you told me with

"I now adjusted it to the middle of the screen, and could save, but now,
the monitor's message "doing auto sync" appears again in the middle of
  the monitor."

what does that mean ? The monitors on screen menu cannot be influenced by
the operating system ??
Comment 11 Marcus Schaefer 2005-11-28 09:50:01 UTC
Hmm, this works as it should:
you called sax2 changed the position and the new mode was saved
in xorg.conf. Referring to the information you gave me:

 xfine: 0\:1280x1024
 0:1280 1368 1504 1728 1024 1025 1028 1068:
   1280 1352 1488 1712 1024 1025 1028 1068:134.72

 the new config: /etc/X11/xorg.conf

 Section "Modes"
  Identifier "Modes[0]"
  Modeline "1280x1024" 134.72 1280 1352 1488 1712 1024 1025 1028 1068
  ...
 EndSection

So there is no bug your mode changes has been saved and if you start
the server with that config your changes from the LEFT to middle should
be viewable

I'm sorry for comment #10 I didn't see your first attachment so I was
able to check what happened and report in comment #11. Well but I still
don't understand what you mean with the monitors message "doing auto sync"
Comment 13 Thorsten Staerk 2005-11-28 13:14:20 UTC
The reason why I started configuring the screen position was that in a default installation, my monitor gives a very hindering information in its middle. This is a white box with the info "doing auto sync. Please wait."

When starting with yast2 and changing the screen position, this change is not saved, so I do not regard this bug as solved.
Comment 14 Marcus Schaefer 2005-11-28 13:54:58 UTC
If you change the monitors picture using the keys on the monitor itself
this information is never known to the operating system. The installation
is done in a so called framebuffer mode. If you change the position using
the monitor keys your monitor will or will not save the changes made to
this mode. In the installed system an accelerated driver is used an in almost
all cases the mode the driver will choose has a different timing and your
monitor will not remember the old mode. This is something depending on your
monitor not the OS. I'm sorry
