Description Chuck Davis 2005-10-29 17:52:09 UTC
Since 9.1 Kbear has not functioned and I was forced to install gftp on clients. Now, most clients do not have a DVD so install is via CD. Unfortunately, SUSE installs the broken ftp client that has been that way for at least 2 iterations and does not even put a functional gui ftp client on the CDs. This is not only a great inconvenience to customers, it could likely give SUSE a big black eye for new users. See 103752, 117710, 118564 and 114847. Either put gftp in the CD distro or fix Kbear. Thanks.

(gftp is part of SL 10.0 box, in OSS is probably missing due to space limitation...)

Comment 2 Chuck Davis 2005-11-01 15:47:32 UTC
gftp is NOT part of the boxed CD set. That's my problem. There is no working gui ftp client in the CD distro. Kbear (which I much prefer) has been broken for so long that it appears there is no desire to fix it. (I don't see any way the engineers at Novell could be unaware they are distributing a broken ftp client for at least 3 iterations now) I would much prefer to have Kbear fixed but if that is not going to happen then I need gftp included in the CD distro. And I only use boxed sets -- not free versions.

is there a problem using konqueror for FTP ?

Comment 4 Chuck Davis 2005-11-01 18:12:25 UTC
Actually, Dirk, I've never used Konqueror for ftp before. Just tried it out a bit and it looks slick. Kbear should still be fixed, however. Few new users are going to know about using Konqueror for ftp.

But I do thank you for bringing the ftp capabilities of Konqueror to my attention. Perhaps until Kbear is fixed Novell could put Konqueror on the internet->data exchange menu item with "ftp://username@" filled in at the top?

I'll drop kbear from the distribution.
