- connect ipod
- wait until icon for ipod appears
- right click ipod icon
- choose "safely remove"
result : error message that there is no line in /etc/fstab for the ipod. 

This is the result of not using fstab-sync in SUSE 10.0. It should probably be disabled or replaced by a simple sync since we use subfs. At best we would provide a umount method in HAL and connect the GUI there.

This is not a problem of HAL and not using fstab-sync. This is a problem of the desktop environment (KDE and GNOME). You don't need a entry in /etc/fstab to umount a device. I don't know why they try to use the fstab for this.

In fact: If you finish all write processes and stop accessing the device the ipod is automatically umounted by submountd after some seconds and you can remove the ipod without risk. If you are unsure, check /proc/mounts .
