Bugzilla – Bug 132500
doing suse update from 9.3 to 10.0 rather than clean new install causes usb hardrives to not work and be undetected
Last modified: 2006-07-14 14:03:43 UTC
i have had this problem since updated and read that many others with ipod and usb mass storage devices have had the same problem. when you update from 9.30 to suse 10.0 everthying works fine, except usb mass storage devices, external usb hardrives etc - my freecom 160gb classic usb 2.0 hardrive is no longer detected or found and just won't work so i can't use it, despite the fact it worked perfectly in suse 9.3 before i updated. tried this on two computers. please help fix this. thanks.
i have been messing around with this problem for some time now. it seems that it's not just about whether you updated from 9.3 or not. i've two computers and i can't get the drive to work on either. both where fine on 9.3. did updates because didn't want to lose settings from doing a clean install but today i bit the bullet as i really need to use this hard drive. so i clean installed suse 10.0 oss on one of the machine - guess what! still no hardrive after installation. i'm mortified, why would the freecom device work in 9.3 but just not work at all or even be recognised in 10.0. anyone who can help please do so. thanks.
please run 'hwinfo > hwinfo.txt' and attach the output.
Created attachment 57288 [details] hardware info text file hi i plugged in the device and then ran hwinfo, then i saved to text file. the drive is in the hwinfo list as freecom 160 but it's just ticking over and not working as usual. thanks.
There are several things wrong here. One is: ... <6>Serial: 8250/16550 driver $Revision: 1.90 $ 4 ports, IRQ sharing enabled <4>ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A <4>ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A <4>ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A <4>ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A <6>io scheduler noop registered ... the serial ports are detected twice, for whatever reason. Please run 'dmesg | grep -n ttyS' to confirm. second is: ... <6>NTFS volume version 3.1. <3>Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 321672960 <3>scsi8 (0:0): rejecting I/O to dead device <3>Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 321672952 <3>scsi8 (0:0): rejecting I/O to dead device <3>scsi8 (0:0): rejecting I/O to dead device ... The dmesg output starts right at scsi host 8. In any case, please try a newer kernel from here: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/olh/kernel/bug105964/ Post the 'dmesg' output from this kernel.
ok i've updated the default and non-gpl kernels as you suggested from the link you gave me. typing dmesg into konsole gives the following: usb 5-4: device descriptor read/64, error -71 scsi15 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices usb-storage: device found at 18 usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning Vendor: HDS72251 Model: 6VLAT20 Rev: V34O Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00 SCSI device sda: 321672961 512-byte hdwr sectors (164697 MB) sda: assuming drive cache: write through SCSI device sda: 321672961 512-byte hdwr sectors (164697 MB) sda: assuming drive cache: write through sda: sda1 Attached scsi disk sda at scsi15, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Attached scsi generic sg0 at scsi15, channel 0, id 0, lun 0, type 0 usb-storage: device scan complete usb 5-4: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 18 SFW2-INext-DROP-DEFLT IN=eth1 OUT= MAC= SRC=192.168.1.4 DST=192.168.1.255 LEN=248 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=2 DF PROTO=UDP SPT=138 DPT=138 LEN=228 usb 5-4: failed to restore interface 0 altsetting 0 (error=-110) usb 5-4: USB disconnect, address 18 15:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x10000 end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 321672960 printk: 72 messages suppressed. Hmm, all the good stuff scrolled out of the dmesg buffeer. We have to increase its size. Please boot with the additional kernel cmdline option: log_buf_len=2M you can append this to the other cmdline options in /boot/grub/menu.lst Did you already try the 'safe settings' entry in the boot menu?
sorry can you give me some clear steps to take. i apologise but i've done everything so far with yast and typed what you said in konsole but as i'm still an amatuer who doesn't want to use big bux windows i'm still learning about linux. thanks, i'll do whatever you need but i'll need some steps to follow. thanks again.
yast2-bootloader should allow you to add additional kernel cmdline options.
where do i put the command and which part of the boot-loader do i alter from yast?
start the yast2 control center, look for bootloader config, its probably behind 'System'. There must be a place where the kernel cmdline options can be altered.
you mean this bit? # Modified by YaST2. yes, add 'log_buf_len=2M' after the 'showopts' string for the 'linux' entry. I dont have a yast frontend here, so I cant say how it looks exactly.

this sounds more like an acpi bug. serial detected twice, usb loosing connection. try a BIOS update from asus.com for your A7N266-VM board. go to http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us and search for A7N266-VM current version seems to be 1007, you have 1006. Not a Linux problem, bug the dudes at asus.
if that's the case why did i have no problems in suse 9.3 ?
that and the fact that i'm also experiencing the same problem on my toshiba laptop, only i did a clean install not an update on that. different system, different bios etc. both systems were ok with suse 9.3 though.
I wonder if this is related to 134136?
Bug 134136 is completely unrelated.
I don't see evidence (yet) that this failure is related to ACPI. Does the device work properly if you boot with "acpi=off" or "acpi=noirq"? If yes, please past a copy of /proc/interrupts from both the success case and the failure case into this bug report, and attach the output from lspci -vv. If no, then it might be useful if you can still get a dmesg and /proc/interrupts from the success case with the old release.
well i updated to 10.1 and now have no problem, the drive is found straight away. doesn't help this bug for 10.0 but thought you should no it's ok with 10.1
According to last comment problem is fixed or vanished.
