At the time as gdm starts, gdm crashes and a message:
"The greeter application appears to be crashing.
 Attempting to use a different one."
apppears. After that dm crashes no more.

Ladislav: I very much doubt this is a dup. Does startx work after you called SuSEconfig?

It is a dupe, but of bug 132010, a compiler error causing problems with libgnomecanvas, its worked around in the latest stable.

startx works. But the problem is with displaymannager, not with X server.
