I installed the 10.1 Alpha 2 as a german localized version (and with NIS, no local user) and after finished install tried to login via KDM. But the keyboard layout of KDM was not German, it was US but on tty-console all was correct (DE layout). This settings shouldn't differ.

am I right in assuming that startx xterm gives you the same US?

10.1 Alpha 2 has that fc-cache bug which prevents the installation from
writing any kind of X configuration. the standard framebuffer config from
the inst-sys is copied by default. Please retest with the next beta version
