Bugzilla – Bug 134201
GNOME screensaver doesn't see keyboard or mouse activity; won't disable
Last modified: 2006-03-14 11:26:19 UTC
I'm running SUSE Linux 10.0, with all of the YOU updates that have been made available as of Nov 17 2005. I'm using GNOME. Versions: gnome-screensaver-0.0.13-2 xscreensaver-4.22-5 Starting this morning, the screensaver has been blanking and locking the screen every 10 minutes, even though I have been using the mouse and typing. In the GNOME preferences, I had "Blank Screen" selected; timeout was 10m; screen locking was enabled. Out of frustration, I disabled the screensaver in the GNOME preferences. Never-the-less, 10 minutes after the previous lock, the screen locked again. I notice that even after disabling the screensaver, it's still running. Don't know if that is expected: ccoffing 5808 0.0 0.5 13452 5428 ? S Nov09 0:31 gnome-screensaver It's as if the gnome-screensaver is cut off from the world. It doesn't see my activity, and it doesn't see my request to disable it. I don't see anything suspicous in /var/log. My machine has been up for 7 days, and been running GNOME for several weeks, and the screensaver has behaved up until today. "kill 5808" seems to be the only solution. *sigh*
Did you restart the gnome-screensaver after the YOU updates (provided there was a gnome-screensaver update)?
No. There has been no gnome-screensaver update recently (note the install date of Sept 26. My computer has been power cycled since then): ccoffing1:/var/log # rpm -qi gnome-screensaver Name : gnome-screensaver Relocations: (not relocatable) Version : 0.0.13 Vendor: SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Nuernberg, Germany Release : 2 Build Date: Tue 13 Sep 2005 06:37:37 AM MDT Install date: Mon 26 Sep 2005 01:29:13 PM MDT Build Host: gozinto.suse.de Here is what has been installed/updated recently: # rpm -qa --qf="%{INSTALLTIME}\t%{INSTALLTIME:date}\t%{NAME}\n"| sort -g [...snip...] 1131377496 Mon 07 Nov 2005 08:31:36 AM MST ethereal 1131377512 Mon 07 Nov 2005 08:31:52 AM MST pwdutils 1131396712 Mon 07 Nov 2005 01:51:52 PM MST tcl 1131396718 Mon 07 Nov 2005 01:51:58 PM MST tk 1131396723 Mon 07 Nov 2005 01:52:03 PM MST blt 1131396725 Mon 07 Nov 2005 01:52:05 PM MST python-tk 1131396733 Mon 07 Nov 2005 01:52:13 PM MST python-devel 1131563061 Wed 09 Nov 2005 12:04:21 PM MST giflib 1131742256 Fri 11 Nov 2005 01:50:56 PM MST qemu 1132166803 Wed 16 Nov 2005 11:46:43 AM MST libgda 1132166825 Wed 16 Nov 2005 11:47:05 AM MST gtk2 1132166832 Wed 16 Nov 2005 11:47:12 AM MST gtk2-devel 1132166837 Wed 16 Nov 2005 11:47:17 AM MST gdk-pixbuf 1132183174 Wed 16 Nov 2005 04:19:34 PM MST ccm63
Some days ago, I saw the same behavior. Unfortunately, I cannot offer more debug info.
I had the same problem yesterday (logged in since Monday). Logging out and back in (from/to GNOME) seemed to fix the problem. I suspect this week's updates.
I'm seeing this again today with SL 10.0 (with all the latest updates available via YOU).
Here are some current versions, what's been updated recently, etc (although I now doubt that updates are relevant. Just seems to be a latent bug in the gnome screensaver code that rears its head now and then.) gnome-screensaver-0.0.13-3.1, xscreensaver-4.22-5 > uptime 10:28am up 20 days 22:28, 7 users, load average: 1.25, 0.74, 0.50 > rpm -qa --qf="%{INSTALLTIME}\t%{INSTALLTIME:date}\t%{NAME}\n"| sort -g [...snip...] 1139502188 Thu 09 Feb 2006 09:23:08 AM MST apache2-prefork 1139856572 Mon 13 Feb 2006 11:49:32 AM MST poppler 1139856598 Mon 13 Feb 2006 11:49:58 AM MST xpdf 1139856626 Mon 13 Feb 2006 11:50:26 AM MST kernel-smp 1139856656 Mon 13 Feb 2006 11:50:56 AM MST kernel-smp-nongpl 1139856709 Mon 13 Feb 2006 11:51:49 AM MST kernel-source 1139856754 Mon 13 Feb 2006 11:52:34 AM MST kernel-xen 1139856765 Mon 13 Feb 2006 11:52:45 AM MST kernel-xen-nongpl 1139856771 Mon 13 Feb 2006 11:52:51 AM MST alsa 1139856786 Mon 13 Feb 2006 11:53:06 AM MST kdegraphics3 1139856804 Mon 13 Feb 2006 11:53:24 AM MST kdelibs3 1139856810 Mon 13 Feb 2006 11:53:30 AM MST binutils 1140025770 Wed 15 Feb 2006 10:49:30 AM MST sysconfig 1140025786 Wed 15 Feb 2006 10:49:46 AM MST openssh 1140025789 Wed 15 Feb 2006 10:49:49 AM MST openssh-askpass 1140025789 Wed 15 Feb 2006 10:49:49 AM MST syslog-ng 1140554345 Tue 21 Feb 2006 01:39:05 PM MST gpg 1140714193 Thu 23 Feb 2006 10:03:13 AM MST resmgr 1140808930 Fri 24 Feb 2006 12:22:10 PM MST latex2html-pngicons 1140808934 Fri 24 Feb 2006 12:22:14 PM MST latex2html 1140809812 Fri 24 Feb 2006 12:36:52 PM MST gnutls 1141056253 Mon 27 Feb 2006 09:04:13 AM MST openssl 1141056279 Mon 27 Feb 2006 09:04:39 AM MST net-tools 1141244506 Wed 01 Mar 2006 01:21:46 PM MST ethereal 1141244553 Wed 01 Mar 2006 01:22:33 PM MST liby2util 1141244561 Wed 01 Mar 2006 01:22:41 PM MST ruby 1141254376 Wed 01 Mar 2006 04:06:16 PM MST qemu

gnome-screensaver 2.14.0 should fix this, and has been submitted to autobuild
