Description Ioannis Manoloudis 2005-11-29 12:42:23 UTC
I use a usb ADSL modem which is based on connexant's AccessRunner chipset.
According to the following extract from the Kernel 2.6.13 changelog the modem should work with SuSE Linux 10.
What is going wrong?
Why Yast doesn't detect it under network->DSL?

YaST2 doesn't seem to detect this -> doesn't sound like a kernel bug for the time being.
Comment 2 Martin Lasarsch 2005-11-29 13:19:53 UTC
please provide the output of:

hwinfo --usb
Comment 3 Karsten Keil 2005-11-29 13:40:08 UTC
It do not detect it, because we do not have access to such a device up to now.
What we need is the hwinfo --usb and some more infos about parameters and if
needed additional tools/firmware etc. And finally someone who can prove and verify, that this device will work.
A new device cann't cause major bugs.

My modem is a Crypto f200. It is very popular among the ISPs here in Greece.
I hope this helps.

Thank you for the info.
I searched the internet for some more info about Access Runner USB xDSL modems
and here are some on the http://accessrunner.sourceforge.net/ site.

It seems that the firmware for these modems is not freely available, you have to extract it from windows drivers. We cannot support this out of the box for legal reasons, so even if we improve our HW detection to find this modem and instruct the kernel to load the driver, it will not work, since the firmware is missing.
Comment 6 Karsten Keil 2005-11-29 15:03:41 UTC
Ioannis, if you get this device working with the instructions for above site and maybe some other sources, please keep us informed, maybe we can try to write some HOWTO for this.
I doubt, that we can integrate "out of the box" support in our distribution, because the firmware problem.
Comment 9 Ioannis Manoloudis 2005-12-02 13:29:52 UTC
Unfortunately I couldn't extract the firmware.
Instead I did what every Linux user suggests...I bought an ADSL modem/rooter/firewall which has ethernet connections. My Netgear ADSL modem actually is built on...GPL and LGPL code as it does mention in the escorted documentation. It even has a printed copy of the GPL.
As far as the AccessRunner modem...many users should face similar problems as this modem is very popular among the ISPs.
Could NOvell work out with Conexant a formula to distribute drivers for this modem through yast or through Conexant's website, in the same way NVIDIA distributes the graphic drivers?
Ioannis

Due to the firmware issue we can not do so much about this.
