Description Forgotten User KSYEYC9iJz 2005-12-03 21:13:18 UTC
When I try creating boot floppies, at the completion of each floppy, the system refuses to eject the DVD from the drive.I've tryed clicking on
the mounted desktop Icon but there is no unmount option, only eject which fails. I cannot eject the DVD manually either. Some times the following command works: umount -f /dev/hdc and was able to unmount and eject the DVD. Still have not been able to create disk #8 at all. Just hangs up. Rescue disk creates OK but does not release the DVD also.
This did not occur in my 9.1 installation.

Hardware PIII 866MHZ, 512MB Memory 80GB hard drive dedicated to Linux, Dual boot with GRUB and Win XP. DVD is IOMAGIC 16X Dual Layer. Three partiations, /swap and home are seperate from root.

I reported this to Novell installation support and they could not get it to fail. Said to report it here.
Comment 1 Michael Gross 2005-12-05 16:41:46 UTC
The general problem with floppies is that tey are failing very soon when in usage. Have you tried several floppies here? The write-process mit hang in the background, which would lock the DVD drive the image is read from, because it would be marked as being in usage (because a file is currently being accessed). Please attach the yast2 logfiles and the output auf `ps -auxw | grep fd0', as well as `lsof /media/floppy' and `lsof /media/dvdwriter' (assuming these are the mountpoints of your used DVD- and floppy drive. About 50 lines of your syslog (tail -50 /var/log/messages > messages.txt) will also be useful. Please attach it all here using the attachment feature and don't compress single files. Thanks.

Sorry took so long to get this, YaST2 logs will follow since I do not see way to submit multiple attachments. There are two YaST logs for today.

Please answear the questions I asked you in comment #3. Moreover, I asked for more output. The YaST logs alone are not sufficient. Thanks.
Comment 6 Forgotten User KSYEYC9iJz 2005-12-09 17:03:29 UTC
Micheal I sent them yesterday, they appear as comments 2,3,4 in this bug display. I am relative new to Linux and am still learning how things work I could not find out how to sent them all together. Can the attachments be zipped files? If you did not get them let me know and I will send them again.
Thanks for your help!
Comment 7 Michael Gross 2005-12-12 16:46:10 UTC
On the first glance this looks like a problem with your DVD drive... it has several seek errors. This would indicate a broken disk or some problems with the bus itself. Please attach the output of `hwinfo --ide'. Are you using the reail version (pressed DVD) or did you use a downloaded image?

You can check this consistence of your drive by reading it out using dd (dd if=/dev/dvd of=./test.iso [assuming /dev/dvd points to your dvd-drive]) and comparing the checksums of both these images and your drive:

% md5sum ./test.iso
% md5sum /dev/dvd

You can also use the `check media' within YaST, this test should also succeed.

Both these filesums should be identical and you should check if there are no great delays and read errors occuring in your syslog. If it does, check your wiring, sometimes those errors are produced by bent or too long IDE cables or even by incorrect jumper settings (...).

Michael: Here's the additional information you requested. I am using a boxed version of SuSE10.0 purchased direct from Novell. I assume that is the retail version.

I did not see any errors in the logs. looked at all the logs available in YaST. Only errors were related to the fd0 no media found and powersaver. Also V6 not supported.

I will check the cables, etc when I return home on Friday. Let me know if there is anything I can send additionally. I will try and get it to hangup again and gather all the data again and check it against these runs. Let you know if I see something different. I'll also check I/O magics website site for anyupdates to the drives.

Thanks again for your continued help.

From the looks of it your drive appears to be working correctly. I'll reassign this now...

Jiri: I hope the requested information helps you here. Please have a look.
Comment 10 Jiri Srain 2006-01-11 14:57:48 UTC
DVD drive seems to be working correctly, but the YaST log says some strange information about the floppy drive:

/dev/fd0: No such device or address
(this is output of the DD command)

Once it fails, are you able to create the floppy manually via the dd command? The name of the image can be found at the end of the log (eg. in the attached one: Image selected: /tmp/YaST2-01879-19Wonk/floppy/bootdsk8

Jiri; since I change my floppy drive out with a new one about a week ago, I decided to try YaST2 again (today after recieving youremail)to make a set of floppies. I found one interesting thing. I go thru the following steps:
 select first floppy
put DVD in DVD drive (hdc), Select next tell it to format disk, tell it to unmount disk. it formats, copies disk image to floppy gives success message, asks if I want to remount floppy (Does not matter if I answer yes or no). Goes back to main screen, I go in and select 2nd (etc) floppy an start thru the steps. When it tries to find the image, it asks me to insert the CD again and tries to read my CD drive instead of the DVD drive. It I say abort it comes up to the format screen, if i say eject it goes and ejects the empty CD RW drive.
At this point if I enter the umount -f /dev/hdc and then go back into YaST2 and select the 2nd floppy, etc. it will correctly read the DVD and create it. This happens for each floppy thru number 8. That one gives me the following error:

2006-01-11 10:56:13 <1> linux(8561) [YCP] clients/bootfloppy.ycp:181 Image selected: /tmp/YaST2-08561-Tprsst/floppy/bootdsk8
2006-01-11 10:58:18 <3> linux(8561) [YCP] Report.ycp:431 An error occurred while copying the image file to the floppy disk. Verify that a valid floppy medium is in the drive and that you have root permissions then try again.

I am in YaST as root, I have tried brand new floppies.

When I look in /tmp the above mentioned file does not exist.

/tmp less -l

I need to study th dd command to determine the correct format for the test you want but if the files not there it will not work. i did check and my CD Drive are correctly jumpered for master / slave and all the cables are tight. The DVD RW drive is brand new (December){I/O Magic]. It replaced an NEC read only DVD.

let me know if the YaST2 file should be there? Is it possible the floppy 8 image is corrupt on my DVD? Is the hang until umount a bug?
Comment 12 Jiri Srain 2006-01-12 06:11:23 UTC
The images are not stored on the DVD, they are cerated on-the-fly (the reason is that it is possible - not through YaST - create also different kinds of boot medias).

Steffen, how many floppy images do we have on SL10.0?
Comment 13 Steffen Winterfeldt 2006-01-12 10:51:12 UTC
10.0 has 7 images.
Comment 14 Forgotten User KSYEYC9iJz 2006-01-12 17:38:20 UTC
That explains why the file floppy get the error, YaST indicated 8 floppies and then the rescue disk, custom floppy and download floppy. still does not explain why I need to do the umount command ar it tries to go to the wrong drive after each of the first 7 standard floppies.

Thanks for your continuing help.
Comment 15 Jiri Srain 2006-01-23 10:19:30 UTC
@13: YaST sets: AMD64: 7, i386: 8. What will be the count for 10.1?

@14: Russ, I don't understand this comment...
Comment 16 Steffen Winterfeldt 2006-01-23 11:00:01 UTC
Looks like 8 or 9. Can't tell right now.
Comment 17 Forgotten User KSYEYC9iJz 2006-01-23 16:43:31 UTC
ref @14. when i go into YaST2, /system/create boot & rescue floppies, it lists a selection of 8 standard floppies, rescue floppy, custom floppy and download floppy image options. According to @13 there are only 7 standard floppies. After I select each standard floppy and create it instead of going back to my DVD drive when I try the next floppy, it tries to read from my CDRW instead. If I do a umount -f /dev/hdc (my DVD) and then create the next floppy it creates it. It looks like it is going to the cdRW when ever I tell it to remount the drive or finish. I'm using an i386 (@13) so if its supposed to write 8 Floppies it never able to create the 8th floppy. Gets error message in @11 third paragraph.

Does this help?
Comment 18 Jiri Srain 2006-08-10 11:31:55 UTC
Russ, the package management was replaced for 10.1. Does the problem with using different floppy drive persist in 10.1 (or SLED)?
Comment 19 Forgotten User KSYEYC9iJz 2006-08-10 16:07:23 UTC
Answer to #18. I do not know, I have not upgraded to 10.1 yet. May skip it and wait for 10.2 I can can retry 10.0 since there have been some updates since this was entered. Let me know if you want me to try.
Comment 20 Jiri Srain 2006-08-11 05:34:11 UTC
testing on 10.0 doesn't help, the rewrite of the package manager didn't get its way to 10.0...
Comment 21 Matej Horvath 2006-11-22 10:26:56 UTC
Please upgrade to some newer SuSE Linux version. Closing as Invalid.
