Description Me Private 2005-12-05 21:06:35 UTC
After connecting the new all-in-one device HP PSC 1410 the message new hardware has been installed appeared and I went as a root in YaST to configure it. There was no driver for printer 1410, I tried with psc 1310 and everything went correctly , the printer worked fine.
Then I tried to configure the scanner and Yast gives me choice with several HP drivers , the hpaio and hpjs recognozed new device but when I tested I received the message:
" hpaio:/usb/PSC_1400_series?serial=CN.......:Error during device I/O "
After that I download the latest hpaio driver , compiled and installed it. Now I find a driver for printer 1400 which as well worked fine , but the situation with the scanner was the same.
I tried Mandriva 2006 it recognized the both devices correctlly , loaded drivers automaticly and the both devices started to work. So I decided that the problem is not in Linux itself . There should be some specific with SuSE.
Hope for help to solve that ant make the scanner works under SuSE as well.

Thank you in advance.

Hello,

in order to do that, we need some more information. Please provide us with the output if `hwinfo --scanner', as well as 500 lines of /var/log/messages. You can attach these resulting files with the attachment-feature below. This error occurs if you try to start xsane?

Right now I don't see that the YaST people should be involved, because the models 1310 and 1410 are probably virtually the same with some different features. Let's see how the scanner identifies itself. Thanks.
Comment 2 Me Private 2005-12-07 17:59:27 UTC
I heve sent required info by mail back.

Looking forward for a reply.

Thank you in advance.

Please also attach `hwinfo --scanner' and the YaST2 logfiles (just to be on the safe side).
Comment 5 Michael Gross 2005-12-08 14:39:26 UTC
Please _never_ mail any information directly to any person involved with the bug. This information must be available to all persons here, not only to one. This ensures the transperancy and traceability of the process. So please provide your information here.

One notice: openSUSE is the product for the Wiki at opensuse.org, please use SUSE Linux 10.x as product. I'll change it here for you.

Please don't inline large ammounts of text here, use the attachment feature of bugzilla instead.

The YaST people should take a look on this anyway. Moreover, I'll take the kernel-maintainers into CC, because this appears to be a problem with the USB subsystem. Maby something is already known here?
Comment 8 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2005-12-12 21:23:35 UTC
I'm sorry, but I do not see any USB kernel issues in the log file. pushing it
back to the yast developers...
Comment 9 Michael Gross 2005-12-13 15:58:51 UTC
Johannes: Please take a look at this?
Comment 10 Johannes Meixner 2005-12-27 15:20:03 UTC
I was on vacation - therefore the delay.

"Error during device I/O" is not caused by YaST.
Something goes wrong during USB data transfer.
I/O error messages are well known when something goes wrong
during USB data transfer - in particular when it works sometimes
and sometimes not, see for example
http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2005/09/jsmeix_scanner-setup-100.html
"USB access conflicts for Epson all-in-one devices"
We provide a sane package update for this problem, see
http://www.novell.com/linux/download/updates/100_i386.html
Note that this problem should not happen for HP all-in-one devices
as HP all-in-one devices do not appear at the USB as a device with
several interfaces but only as a plain printer device, therefore
"hwinfo --scanner" or "sane-find-scanner" do not detect it.

YaST sets it up correctly:
It activates the right SANE driver "hpaio"
and then SANE recognizes the device as an active scanner,
see the YaST log:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scanner.ycp:335 Active scanners:
[$["backend":"hpaio",
   "manufacturer":"hp",
   "model":"PSC_1400_series",
   "sane_device":"hpaio:/usb/PSC_1400_series?serial=CN549V70G904BN"]
------------------------------------------------------------------------

But if fails when bigger amounts of data should be transferred
during testing the device.

I don't have a "PSC_1400_series" but my HP LaserJet 1220 all-in-one
works well with the "hpaio" driver. Therefore I assume it is not
a problem of the driver but in the USB system.

how to provide a detailed log what happens during a test-scan.

As long as the test-scan fails it is useless to try out the
various user-frontends like xsane, kooka, ...
Comment 11 Me Private 2005-12-30 14:04:05 UTC
I did as you had recommended to me - downloaded the patch and installed it , but still have the same message , still the scanner do not work under Suse.I agree that the problem is not caused by Yast.
Do you think if I send some some logs from Mandriva 2006, that will help you in finding solution.
The scanner and printer work fine under Mandriva 2006, so the problem it should be caused by something more particullary about SuSE.
If that could help please let me know which logs you need.

Happy New Year.
