Description Silviu Marin-Caea 2005-12-06 06:28:44 UTC
The default font used to be "Misc Console", but in Alpha2 and Alpha3 the font is "Monospace". It's too thin, not easily readable.
Comment 1 Silviu Marin-Caea 2005-12-16 10:46:16 UTC
In alpha4 it's Misc Fixed, still too thin.
Comment 2 Stephan Kulow 2005-12-16 11:04:16 UTC
misc fixed is the one it should be. If it's too thin for your liking, feel free to change it. The Monospace was a real bug though
Comment 3 Silviu Marin-Caea 2005-12-16 11:48:07 UTC
Ok. I know that I can change it, however I have filed the bug because I thought it's useful to the general user population to have a readable default font. If most of the people are confortable with Misc Fixed, then it's fine.
Comment 4 Stephan Kulow 2005-12-16 12:39:32 UTC
I can't tell you about most of the people. We'll see. Misc Fixed _is_ readable and is the default for xterm and I'm not aware of anyone complaining so far.
Comment 5 Dirk Mueller 2005-12-16 14:22:12 UTC
which size of misc fixed did you use ? screenshot? For me "misc fixed" looks pretty good.
Comment 6 Silviu Marin-Caea 2006-02-03 16:54:52 UTC
Can't it be bold, at least?

do you like this font?
Comment 8 Cristian Rodríguez 2006-02-03 17:26:18 UTC
misc fixed looks really awful. :-(

something like Misc Console is much better.

Comment 9 Dirk Mueller 2006-02-03 17:33:41 UTC
Misc Console only exists in one size: 13pt. that doesn't fit everyone's needs I'm afraid. For me it would be way too large, even on a 1600x1200 screen.

Comment 10 Silviu Marin-Caea 2006-02-03 17:35:50 UTC
The font needs to be scalable and bold. On high resolution monitors a thin font is not readable.

Misc Console did the job well, in spite of not being scalable.
Comment 11 Dirk Mueller 2006-02-03 17:41:35 UTC
please tell me details (screen resolution, size, dpi etc)

Comment 12 Silviu Marin-Caea 2006-02-03 17:57:34 UTC
1280x1024
monitor size: 340x270, 17"

I'd like to clarify: the problem is not the _size_ of the font, because it's big enough, the problem is that it's not thick enough, not bold.

Characters are just 1 pixel thick, it's strenuous on my eyes.
Comment 13 Stephan Kulow 2006-02-03 18:37:23 UTC
you're free to change it and I'm pretty sure you're not the only one. But especially as we reach higher resolutions, we need a font that supports more than one size. and misc console does not.
Comment 14 Silviu Marin-Caea 2006-02-03 18:47:07 UTC
Ok, ok, but can this new font be *bold* by default? That would make it more readable.
Comment 15 Stephan Kulow 2006-02-03 18:55:00 UTC
misc fixed bold looks pretty ugly if you ask me (and my wife :). And I'm not aware of another canidate ;(
Comment 16 Silviu Marin-Caea 2006-02-03 19:50:46 UTC
Ok then, it stays the way it is and we move on to something else until a better option presents itself.
Comment 17 Stephan Kulow 2006-02-11 16:41:49 UTC

Comment 18 Andreas Kleen 2006-02-11 17:36:55 UTC
You mean you want a scalable font? If that doesn't work out about using different fonts for different resolutions? At least the standard resolutions (1280x.. 1024x.. etc should look good i think) I can't imagine adding that would be _that_ much more code to konsole and it would make the whole thing much more usable out of the box.

Comment 19 Stephan Kulow 2006-02-11 19:06:59 UTC
if you have a patch, let me know
Comment 20 Dirk Mueller 2006-02-14 10:08:46 UTC
I've asked Mike if he has better suggestions for konsole fonts that are readable on more screen resolutions. It seems we currently don't have a better font available. therefore WONTFIX.
