Bugzilla – Bug 137309
No sound on USB headset when dialing Skype
Last modified: 2006-01-19 14:30:29 UTC
We get no sound on our Plantronics USB headset when trying to make a Skype phone call. Please fix. On the positive side, we can now dial out on our Best Data USB modem (which we couldn't do on previous SUSE releases).
Hmm, could you try 10.0 update kernel?
With the updated kernel on SUSE 10, we could hear dialing on the headset (which we couldn't before) but the party on the other end still couldn't hear us talk. With 9 different volume control programs on this computer, it would be confusing for the average user. The best volume control seems to be the QAMix (speaker icon) which you can right click on to adjust your sound systems including the USB headset. We still have to go back to SUSE 9.2 to make a Skype phone call. What is the solution?
There are two options: 1. Don't use skype. It's nothing but a waste of time to debug such a binary-only program. 2. Try to debug a bit further about this bug. I prefer the first one, but it's your choice. For option 2, please check whether you can playback/capture the audio signals from this device. First, check which device is USB. You can see it in /proc/asound/cards. Suppose that it's the secondary (card 1), run like % aplay -vv -Ddefault:1 somefile.wav For recording, run like % arecord -vv -Ddefault:1 foo.wav and check the resultant WAV file. If it doesn't work, too, upload /etc/asound.state file for more debugging.
Created attachment 60579 [details] /etc/asound.state file Not working. Attached is /etc/asound.state file.
What do you mean "not working"? Did aplay and arecord show nothing with -vv option?
We are currently getting "Problem with sound device" or "Call failed" message. aplay -vv gives us joel@d:~> aplay -vv (nothing) Aborted by signal Interrupt... joel@d:~> arecord -vv gives us Max peak (170 samples): 0x00000001 # 0% Max peak (170 samples): 0x00000001 # 0% (continuous) It appears the problem comes from SUSE 10.1 A3 not activating the Plantronics USB headset correctly. Keep in mind that this works correctly in SUSE 9.2 so the capablility has been there for a long time. SUSE must act now to make this work correctly in SUSE 10.1 A3!
The point being made above is that a USB headset should just work when a customer buys the SUSE Linux OS. They should not have to do a lot of complex, cryptic command line tweaking. Otherwise customers will go to another OS that will work.
You have to pass some WAV file to aplay. Otherwise it waits for inputs from stdin. Does arecord show no signals if you say something to microphone? Then, something is wrong in usb descriptors. Please attach the output of "lsusb -v" (run as root). Also, attach /proc/asound/card1/stream* files (suppose usb is the secondary device). BTW, are you sure that skype got configured with the correct device files (/dev/dsp1) ?

I just made a successful Skype phone call by changing from /dev/dsp to /dev/dsp1 in the Skype settings. The reason that Skype worked in SUSE 9.2 was that the USB headset was picked up by SUSE as the default /dev/dsp when it was plugged in.
OK, then I close this bug.
