Bugzilla – Bug 139604
Icons for "Mongoose" update dialog page and the update applet
Last modified: 2006-03-21 10:56:08 UTC
Hi Anna, shorn told that you would prefer a bugzilla entry to handle this request for icons. For the first step we need icons, that show status of package in table list view: Content area, status column to display the status of the packages (5 Icons): - package is selected for installation - package is selected for delete - locked package - caution – e. g. patches might need some manual work etc. - broken package ...and in our Update Applet (6 Icons) - icons in the menu panel: - available, - not available, - in progress (no icon for not available and in progress means, that panel icons would “jump”) - security update - recommended update - optional update for further information see http://svn.suse.de/trac/webconsole/wiki/Mockups
REMINDER! Hi Anna, due to our schedule we need the icons til 2006-01-31. Please note that ZEN people are doing the update applet (zen-updater) now, they require their icons, too. Thanks!
REMINDER! Hi, Anna, time is short. Icons are needed. Some mockups where you can see the use of the icons are available at: http://svn.suse.de/trac/webconsole/wiki/Hotspots_and_Lists Here is a screenshot of the prototype http://svn.suse.de/trac/webconsole/attachment/wiki/Icon_factory/updatemanager_shot_icons.png Lukas Ocilka <lukas.ocilka@suse.cz> is the developer. To make it more clear: - package is selected for installation The user has selected this package/update or the package is already selected by default, the checkbox is checked now and click onto Apply will install the package - package is selected for remove The user has de-checked the checkbox, the software is selected for de-installation - locked package = hidden package this item will be moved to the section "hidden updates" or "locked packages". In case of an update the update application will not longer display it in the list with available updates but in the list with hidden updates. In case of software packages the item will stay in the list but is marked as locked. - caution – e. g. patches might need some manual work etc. or something other that will need user's attention has happened A kind of "soft warning" icon - broken package Do you need more information.
Hi guys. I am sorry to have kept you waiting on this. Truthfully, I was told that a different updater was being used. We'll get you icons right away. I have a few simple questions. 1. What sizes do you want to use in the menu panel? what sizes do you want to use in the columns? 2. Do you need a particular icon style? Would the Tango style work for you? (See various samples here: http://tango-project.org/Tango_Icon_Library in the gallery/screenshots sections)
Add Lukas and me to cc.
Hi Anna, to answer your questions: 1. Icon size: columns: 16x16, 22x22 menu panel: all sizes (depends on panel size) 2. Tango style work would be fine for us and - of course- Novell icon style should be followed Application icon we need a special icon for the application
Created attachment 65773 [details] full icon set, based on Tango specs. 16x16 will most likely be best for the web app, the others are there to fill in some gaps with Tango theme.
Created attachment 65776 [details] fix to previous attatchment this file fixes dark background artifacts from previous file
Hi, I think we need a different icon for the "web-updater". In the current Beta the Zen-updater is using the icon "system-software-update". So we would have two applications with the same icon. Or is the icon "system installer" the suggestion for the web-updater?
This is *not* my bug. It should be assigned to Ryan. I am assigning it to him.
URGENT: Hi Ryan, excuse me but this is urgent. 1) The Zen-updater will have the icon system-software-update.png. So we will need another icon for the Web-updater as quick as possible. All sizes for every place on the desktop (start menu, desktop icon, task selector, ...) 2) We will need a better icon for the sign "Update (or Package) is selected. Some users tried to use the "+" to open the package description. The current icon has a big "invitation" to click onto it. See mockup: http://w3.suse.de/~sigi/packagemanager/npc/bugs/proto_1.png 2nd: The icon is fine, but the problem is, that the update list is a special list where all security updates are pre-selected by default. The goal was, to give a clear feedback that every package/update that owns an icon will be affected by the "Apply"-button. So the concept behind this status column is a little bit stressed, because all patches in the list are selected, and this will produce a board vertical line with the current squares. A possible solution could be to reduce the 3d-charakter of the icon and to change the square to a circle. - Add = green circle with white "+" inside - Remove = blue circle with white "-" inside - Broken = red circle with white "x" inside BTW: We will need some consistency with the mongoose project. The last mockups I saw will use similar icons for add and remove (e.g. users) - a simple circle with "+" or "-" inside. 3) We will need a icon for the sorting list function (see screenshot) The ZENworks is using a triangle with 2 dashes above or below. The current mockups shows an icon that is a little bit broad. Please ask if there are any questions.

Sigi, As reference, the squares were chosen after discussion with the rest of the design team for a solution to your projects needs that fit the Tango design guidelines. I will replace the icons based on your requests, and should have them to you by the end of today. For reference: The circle was not previously used because of concern of issues with the tango metaphor used for error. A circle with a "-". Also the was concern that the circle with an "x" would be confused with closing, exiting, or canceling. As for the program icon being the same as Xenworks, we had discussed that in all likelihood only one of these programs would be used on a system at a time, if not, the tango specification of reusing icons to reduce reused metaphors will not apply and branding is in order to differentiate you product from Xenworks. I will try and come up with something original, but keep in mind that it may not be as relevant as the previous icons. As for the delay with this bug, there was some miscommunication on my part, and I had moved onto other projects. I apologize and will make this my top priority. Regards,
Thank you very much for the quick response and your information. 3 of 5 people here in Nürnberg tried to click onto the "+" icon to open some additional information. So the main focus in my suggestions was to reduce this problem. And I thought that a circle would not have any aspect of a "open here" symbol. And I see, I have to look deeper onto the tango icons. The problem in the background is that there are so many different styles. For Gnome, KDE, Mongoose, Web-Updater, ZENworks, ... FYI: The "package-broken"-icon with the "-" is a sign for "taboo" here in Europe/Germany. It's used in the YaST Online Update for "never touch/never install" since years. FYI: Perhaps we will use a blue-gray color combination with Novell.com colors. Cori Jones from the Mongoose team will make a mockup with better colors for the Web-Updater. One team, one voice ...
Created attachment 68921 [details] Update to icon request. Here are updated icons with round buttons instead of square. I've also updated the software update and mogoose application icons. They are't quite tango, but it's close. Let me know if these will work or if you want any other changes. Regards,
Hi Ryan, thank you very much. I just made a quick view onto them. They look well. We will discuss the icons tomorrow in the team. cu
If there are no further issues regarding this bug, I would like to close it.
Ok, there has been no traffic on this bug for a month, and the icons have been delivered. Closing.
Hi Ryan, Anna, sorry for my "no response". Of course you can close this "bug".
