Bugzilla – Bug 140856
installing ifolder client after reboot does not prompt to create user account
Last modified: 2007-09-19 03:31:54 UTC
What I have done: I removed ifolders by converting them back to regular folder. I then uninstall ifolder & restart the machine I next install ifolder & restart the computer. In any of these situations I have NOT seen a balloon or prompt to create a new account. With the original 3.1.5230.1 it always prompted everytime I installed and restarted the computer, even after the newere versions were installed & uninstalled, going back to this client. I think this is a HUGE problem for non-technical users as they think after it is installed they are running iFolder... Walking them through this step I think is critical.. Thanks, Joe
Bruce - I was unable to reproduce the issue following the steps provided in the bug's comments section. Below is a list of the iFolder version that I uninstalled and then upgraded to the 3.2 release: 3.0.2005.608 > 3.2.5347.1 3.1.5230.1 > 3.2.5347.1 3.2.5347.1 > 3.2.5347.1 In each case, after installing the 3.2 client and rebooting the system, the client would prompt the user with the balloon notification. In most cases it did take the iFolder client between 30-90 seconds to fully startup and prompt the user with the notification. During this process I did realize that notification changes made in the 3.2 need to be improve. The most notable is the fact that the notification balloon does disappear after a short amount of time. If the user was away from the workstation or missed the notification for whatever reason, there is an increased probability that the user is going to run into some type of usability issue. I would suggest that besides the balloon notification, logic should be included in the client so that if a user attempts any type of iFolder operation, if no account is setup, the user should be informed that they must first setup an account and then present them with the new account dialog.
Joe - Can I get you to try the following steps and report your results back as a comment to this bug about if you are presented with the balloon notification 1 - Install a workstation with the 3.2.5347.1 client 2 - After rebooting the workstation, shutdown the iFolder client 3 - Remove the following directory and all of it's content %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\simias NOTE: This step will remove any iFolder's and their associated accounts 4 - Restart the iFolder client and wait for the task icon to change from the folder with the green arrow to the folder with the red "i". This can take up to about 90 seconds.
Created attachment 61727 [details] Screenshot Screenshot of the 3.2 balloon notification that I was presented with after upgrading from each of the various iFolder client versions.
I converted my ifolder back to a regular folder I then uninstalled the ifolder client & rebooted I next installed client 3.2.5347.1 and rebooted when prompted. I then proceeded to pay attention to my task bar. Many balloons pop up, mostly wireless, windows, iprint and yes ifolder "Ifolder asks to click 'here' to create an ifolder account" It was probably there prior as you pointed out Edward, I apologize for not noticing. However I still think that unless it is "in your face" the users will not notice as I myself did not. I think a window on initial installation would be good as I myself tune out the balloons, I would think many others would as well. This is only my opinion though I'll be off for the holidays, but would be glad to help out and test this more if needed.
Reassigning to Ramesh.
Moving to a P1 priority, as is reported by Beta customer and agreed to in the OES core team.
works in 3.6
